As a GMCer, I have a really low budget but need a car to take with. Ive been looking half heartedly at some saturns, but my heart really wants to drag along something fun, like an old chevette or escort. Problem is, i cant find any information on which older cars to tow and which ones need modifications. the towing guides i find only go back to around 2005. does anyone have a collection of older cars such as 80s cars that are suitable weight wise, and list if they need a trans pump or not.
Also any suggestions on a pump to use instead of the $800 one i keep finding. Grainger HAS to have something one can use for much less.

Donovan, pretty much all standard shifts will tow four down. Really old GMC stuff with a Hydra - Matic should also, and early Mopar A-727s, all of which had a rear pump in the automatic. Rule of thumb - if you can push-start an automatic, you can probably tow it four down. Ask Manny for the true skinny. I use a '91 Jetta diesel someone gave me. Light weight, and the price was right.

As rough rules of thumb to use while looking:
Rule #1: Standard transmission cars can be pulled four down -- with some (rare) exceptions. Automatic transmission cars can NOT be pulled four down -- with some exceptions. Pretty much if what ever lubes the transmission is attached to the OUTPUT of the transmission, it can be towed four down. For automatics this includes most Honda, Saturn and GM (4 speed) cars.
Rule #2: Anything with a manual transfer case (most of the older 4 wheel drives) can be pulled four down. All wheel drive cars can NOT be pulled four down -- with some exceptions. (Mostly dealing with a transfer case that has a neutral position.)
Use these rules to narrow you choices, then check on specific candidates. Availability and cost of base plates might also limit your search.
Just keep in mind, the cost of setting up an older car as a towd, can easily exceed the value of the vehicle. It might be cheaper to get a small trailer to haul your choice of ride.
Then the main concerns are weight and style.

We are setting up a 1978 Alfa Romeo Sport Sedan as a towd. Should be fun and different.

Find a Geo Metro. At 1,600 lbs you can barely tell it's back there. And,
even with AC running, they get over 40mpg. Don't let mileage scare you,
those 3 cylinders can be found happily running into the 300,000 mile
range. Door handles and window cranks break though.
