I got tired of hearing the onan exhaust noise and smelling fumes in the coach. Here is my simple exhaust extension. Costs about 15.00 using 1-1/4" EMT. Sure is less noise in the bed now..

There's a better way to get there from here. This is permanent and very,
very quiet:

Steven, do you have the part # for the k&n filter? Does it fit the stock air filter mount?

Thanks

Steven,

How does this work with it sliding out? Have you removed the 3" dump
tube? I have a friend who is going to make me a custom exhaust so I may
as well do it right and I like this solution.

Stephen, how do you slide the generator out when you are boondocking? Does the pipe have a flexible piece that you install?

Lynn,

Maybe Steve will come on here and explain, but there is no reason to slide the generator out when boondocking, or any other time except for servicing. The 'Power Drawer' is designed to be run in the compartment. In fact, it produces negative pressure in the compartment, by design, so as to make sure it is not forcing exhaust gasses inside the motorhome. Besides that, it is hard on the slides.

Steve's set-up requires the removal of two bolts in order to slide the generator out for servicing.

OK, I had the same question. I didn't want to have a complicated
disconnect to pull it out. I need to pull the Onan out in order to turn
it off. In the coach, the ON works but the OFF doesn't (used to).
Something else to tinker with.

I like Steve's picture too. Dan, There are 4 wires that are behind the Onan. They have a pull apart connector. One is bad, that is why your Onan won't shut off. I been down that road. Hard wired mine.

Lynn,

Nice workmanship.

At Shawnee Ken Broostin gave a presentation on the Onan. He worked for them back in the day this unit was built. He noted that the
airflow path was designed for the unit to be left in.

Tow easily accessable 1/4 x 20 bolts allow it to slide out. I never, ever,
ran the genset extended on the slides unless it was or maintenance
purposes. No heating issues because I always kept the shroud sealed and
clean. Good air flow.

Usually, when you have to pull the genset out to turn it off, simply
cleaning the connector contact with CR 626 (ele contact cleaner) from Home
Depot will result in a good connection allowing the inside switches to work
properly.

Carl,It makes good sense that the blower would pull a neg. air pressure in the compartment. I never thought about that. There is however a large difference in sound and vibration with the compartment pulled out and no smelly exhaust fumes with the discharge above the RV. I guess a little more swag engineering is due to attach to the exhaust with the compartment closed. Every yeay on the Houston rodeo trail ride people are killed by carbon monoxide because they place their portable generators to close to the trailers they use to sleep in.

While I like the idea, I do see a possible problem: It (most likely) will get very hot. Anyone walking around your coach (like little kids) could be subjected to some fairly bad burns. I would at least check to see how hot it gets after running at full load for a few hours.

The "genturi" type extension uses the venturi effect to draw cooling air into the "stack" section of the extension lowering the temperature of the stack. In fact, it is cool enough that plastic can be used for the stack. (The down side is that the stack is larger in diameter.)

I like the idea of a 'gen-turi', and would consider using one under the right circumstances. I have had my Co alarm go off while running the generator, if the wind was right or under certain other conditions. I have never used my Onan overnight simply because I could not sleep with the noise of the Duotherm AC unit(s) running, much less the generator. Most places that I overnight would frown upon generator use after a certain time of night, and usually have rules about 'quiet time', generally after 8:00 PM. The times when I dry camp, in an undeveloped area, it is usually cold at night so it's not an issue.

I have found that since I replaced mu Onan mounts, it is much quieter inside the coach with the generator running. It is also quieter outside the coach when the generator is tucked away in it's compartment with the door closed.
