lots of solutions to this, some more expensive than others.
I think one of the combined inverter/charger/transfer switches
would be cool if we were starting from scratch, but pricey.

For what it's worth, I recently installed a Xantrex ProWatt
pure sine wave inverter with a remote on/off/indicator panel
and an automatic transfer relay.

Here is the Prowatt SW Remote Panel:

and the Xantrex ProWatt inline transfer relay:

Marine Parts Source had the best prices on Xantrex inverters
that I found; see http://www.marinepartssource.com and search for "prowatt sw"

I wired most of the 110 outlets to the transfer relay at
the main AC panel. The relay then plugs into the inverter
and automatically switches between shore or inverter power.
I mounted the inverter remote by the house system monitor panel.

So far, so good. Worked great on our recent trip. It was
especially cool to be flying down the road with our cradlepoint
router and 4G modem plugged in, giving us wireless internet
on the freeway. Hadn't even thought about that in advance. :-)

Unfortunately, the remote control and xfer relay are both
only designed for the xantrex prowatt inverters, so kinda limited
though I don't see why the relay wouldn't work with other inverters.
The relay is only good for 15amps of 110, but that's enough for our use.
It also has ridiculously short wires that made it annoying
to install. The GFI outlet on the inverter was also challenging
(have to pay close attention to the neutral wiring for the GFI to work).

just what I did.
