We are out of touch in Canada for this great rolling rally so don't know if anyone is keeping you up to date. The last two days have been some of the most demanding driving we have experienced in our ten years with this coach. Unbelievably beautiful scenery and what I'm sure would be amount Gene F's favorite roads. 13% grades both up and down, lots of 6 to 11% stuff, some 20 to 40 km long. The coaches are holding up well for the most part. It is a real testament to Manny trans, Manny one ton from ends, alum radiators and the large cooling lines from trans to radiator. Lots of smelly brakes from the coaches without the larger one ton from rotors and calipers. A few with over heating issues on stock radiators, but for the most part every one is making it. It is great to drive with 94 octane real gas and no alcohol. More later. Wish you all were here.

Jerry,

Gee, I didn't know you were in the ad industry, I thought you were in the woodworking business; the email below sounds like an
infomercial for 1 ton front ends, aluminum radiators, transmissions, and transmission cooling lines! ;-)

Sure hope the people with plain old OEM parts can make it all the way across Canada!

Regards,
Rob M.

Canada is kinda big.
Give us a hint of where you are.
I just drove a '37 Ford from Hamilton, Ontario to Vancouver Island.
If you are going to travel down Hwy 17 in Ontario, load up on gas in Wawa. It's a long way through Lake Superior Provincial Park with no gas available.
Other than that, nice day for a drive.

But wait - there's more!

Those coaches with the 1-Ton, Manny tranny, and aluminum radiators will pull all the rest without breaking a sweat all the way across Canada!

We just pulled in to our dry camping spot in kelowma, bc. Discovered
people with GMC's in the area and no knowledge of our CAscaders club.
We are going to set up a traveling blog linked to the Cascaders web site

Jerry is a great salesman. He almost sold me a battery operated bug
repellent tonight but I chose to sit next to him and it didn't cost me a
dime.

There were 24 coaches at the White Rock rally. 12 went on to Whistler and
on to Boston Bar. 7 coaches went on to Kelowna and joined there with
another. Hot weather and clear sky. Going on a 5 winery tour this aft.

Enjoy hearing about the adventure. Maybe I can get a sighting as you get closer to Michigan. Maybe Sault Ste. Marie. Anyway, does the heart good to hear that a few GMC's are rolling along on a great adventure. Have fun and good luck!

When you get to Thunder Bay, be sure to stop off and see the Terry Fox Memorial. It is worth the small detour.

Also fill up with gas in Prawda MB before you hit Ontario and save 10 cents a liter, next in Dryden, and then Thunder Bay cause the price goes up from here. Once further south the price comes down again

I am traveling with Dwayne and Sharon, and Sandy Shull. My 78 Royale is
stock with 98000 miles on the 403. I have big front calipers, stock rear
drums with all metallic linings. I do have the 3:70 differential gear set
in the final drive. It has handled all I asked of it so far on this trip.
Yes, the 13% grades are correct. Lock the transmission in first, keep the
rpm's about 2500, watch the temp gage, and grind it up the hill. The other
two coaches are stock (kinda) also. Downgrades, select the gear you would
use going up, and use the brakes to control your speed. Apply in spurts,
and do not ride the pedal. If you have bad brakes, stay home until you get
them fixed. Scenery is fantastic, once in a lifetime deal. Love every
minute, even changing mechanical fuel pumps by the side of the road. Make
your coaches safe, drive your good parts, don't carry them along as spares.
Use the darn things, that is why we bought them.

Good to hear all are having fun. Did lots of the mountain passes in 2008 and can attest to the views. Any idea how many coaches and ETA for Thunder Bay. Could provide a base depending on numbers. May even try to travel the North shore of Lake Superior if timing is right. If need any help I'm on the list. Please keep up the posting.

Glenn, there are three coaches doing the whole trip. Others are talking
like they may do part of the distance. All comers are welcome. Thanks for
the offer of help. So far, we have had two mechanical fuel pumps fail, one
leaking fuel from the weep hole (failed diaphram, probably attributed to
alcohol blended fuel), and mine, which had the third fitting for a return
line, cracked the top of the pump body and leaked like mad. Tried to find
one in Banff and Calgary with no success, so I bought a hack saw, 21/32"
drill bit, 1/8" pipe tap, and a brass pipe plug. I cut off the fitting
flush with the pump, drilled out the fitting and tapped the hole out.
Screwed the plug in with several turns of teflon tape, and drove to
Calgary. Called ahead and ordered two mechanical pumps and two 4070 carter
electric pumps $529.00 yeouch! Put one in in the street in front of Carol
Gray's house, and drove to Drumheller to see the Dinosaur museum. Wow, what
a museum. Worth the trip. Now have mechanical and electric spares for the
road. Sandy had her coach overheat several times, once on a 11% grade
leading to the RV park in Whistler, BC. Blocked the narrow road for an hour
until she cooled down. Turned out to be a Distributor problem. She also had
a muffler blow out & had that replaced. Another coach had a steel belt fail
on a tire. Spare had a different stud hole diameter, so limped into a small
town & changed the tires from the two rims. Everyone in good spirits in
spite of the breakdowns. Seems about standard for long road trips in old
vehicles. Will try to put up some pix on the photo site in the next few
days, wifi willing.

Hi Glenn
Sure appreciate the offer to assist us.
Tomorrow we head to Saskatoon Wed. the 15th
All goes well we will be heading to Brandon Man. and there by Friday the
17th.
We planned on a stay at the Lake of the Woods at Tom Struthers. then on to
Thunder Bay.
Want ot see Fort William and Terry Fox Memorial. Love to have you join us
for part of the trip.
I figure we will be into Thunder Bay around the 20th or 21st of Agust.

It's been great meeting GMC owners that we have only known to date via the
internet.

You will find us soooo such younger looking that you could ever imagine.

Regards
Dwayne

please email how we can contact you by phone as time approaches.
