Just to toss my 2 cents in, I'll let you know what I've learned. My GMC had the original 13.5k BTU A/C on it for almost a month after we moved into it & the thermostat was set about mid-scale. The compressor only ran about half the time and it was always comfortable in the coach. When the fan bearings got noisy, I replaced the original unit with a newer unit that may be a 8.5k BTU Coleman salvaged from a travel trailer. It keeps it comfortable most of the time, but in the hottest part of the day if Carol starts cooking it can get warm in here. The compressor runs most of the time & my electric bill is quite a bit higher.
What I've learned is that when I get a new motor for the original unit, it's going back on the roof. The less time that the compressor runs, the cheaper the bill. By the same token, if you're buying a new unit, get the biggest that is available. I plan on eventually buying a 15k BTU heat pump unit. They are much more pricey, but in the long run you save money on electricity, whether from mains power or Onan.
BTW, I finally found the oil ports on the old fan motor. When it was installed, they were pointed down instead of up, making it impossible to oil. You'd think that someone either at the factory (or the A/C shop if it's a replacement) would've caught that. If I get a new motor installed I will be checking that. I'll most likely swap it out myself & take advantage of Navy experience instead of trusting a "Parts Swapper" to get it right.
