Running the home A/C in this weather is a great time to stock
up on distilled water for use in batteries, cooling systems, etc.

I collected two gallons in about 4 hours yesterday.

Someone asked recently what I intended to do with the condensate that's now
piped out of my GMC HVAC. I think I failed to anwer that question. The
answer was similar to yours: I collected it in a 2-1/2 gallon jug under
the driver's feet for a while, just to see the collection rate -- that was
HIGH. I gave some thought to piping it to spray nozzles for the radiator
-- I even acquired the nozzles. That's as far as that project's gotten.
The jug's now removed and the water is wasted.

Ken,

I wasn't collecting from the GMC, I was collecting from the evaporator on my
house central A/C unit.

It always seems like I get ready to top up batteries or
do a coolant service, I never have any distilled water.

Off to the store and about $1 a gallon later I am back on the
job.

Just thought I'd give the forum a heads up and find a use
for those empty milk jugs.

I don't use condensate as distilled as it contains dust/pollen etc that gets trapped on the wet plates. It would probably work fine to mix with antifreeze. I would not use it in a battery.

I would think it could be very easy to direct the GMC's A/C onto the radiator given its elevated location.

I agree Steve, in addition to the dust/pollen issue you pointed out, the condensate draining from an A/C unit passes over aluminum and copper plates and tubes that can contribute metallic compounds to the water - compounds which I certainly do not want in my batteries.

HVAC condensate is hardly distillate in my book.

Steve,

I don't think it is a good idea to use the condensate for either the battery or the radiator. As you say it will have dust and other contaminates in it. If our air was completely free of contaminates, it might be alright, but the distilled water at Walmart or other places is less than 1 dollar so why take a chance. The contaminates in the atmosphere is going to react with the metal in the radiator and the battery and it takes a lot of air over the condenser to give you 1 gallon of water. I think that is a false saving.

This post kinda changes the original intent of this msg, but: I used to
have a friend who owned a 1958 Ford 4 door sedan. It was equipped with an
in line 6 cylinder engine. He used that Ford to tow a 23 foot double axle
travel trailer all over the US. The Ford had the standard duty Radiator and
it overheated enough to cause most of the problems that GMC's have in hot
weather. He rigged up a plastic tank in the huge trunk, equipped it with a
windshield washer pump controlled with a switch on the dash. He ran a hose
to the top of the radiator tank where it connected to a piece of plastic
tube with about 6 mister nozzles that pointed onto the radiator core. When
the switch was activated, the effect was similar to the spray that you see
in the vegetable section at the supermarket. It flat out cooled that Ford
down well enough to all him to drive in very hot weather. Kind of a Rube
Goldberg arrangement but I can't argue with the results. I think he said
that he got the idea from the "Trailer Life" magazine.

Well, I guess this wasn't a good suggestion after all.

Now, I have a new project for the GMC. Adding HEPA filters
to the radiator overflow tank vent and all of the vents on
the battery fill caps.

Read up on Richard Archer's "mister system". Arch just hooked to his
coach's fresh water system and used drip irrigation mister nozzles.

Gene,

Read the signs carefully.
It is probably deionized "for all distilled water uses". It can still have a good dose of dissolved solids.

The last time I went off looking for real distilled water, I had to get it from a local industrial chemical supplier and it was triple distilled and guaranteed to have low conductivity. They refuse to extend the guarantee if the jug you bring (theirs are 5$) is plastic.

HI Matt,

FWIW, I just checked one of the walmart "distilled water" jugs and it says:

Distilled Water

Bottled by: Magnetic Springs Water Co.
Source: Municipal water, Columbus OH
Processed By: Reverse Osmosis, Steam Distillation, Ozonation

Jim,

Well, at least you got a good one, the stuff my wifr got some time ago scaled up the steam iron so bad I had to disassemble and acid clean it.
