Dirty/corroded connections on the adaptor or the extension cord?
I had connectors melt into a puddle at the junction of a 10 ga. cord and
a 12 ga cord. Both were melted; the 12 ga. male connector was all, gone,
all that was left was the actual metal blades. The center part of the 3
socket female on the 10 ga. cord was also slag. The water heater was
turned on and a 600 w heater may have been running. I know the contacts
on the 12 ga. cord were grungy, because they didn't plug in all the way.
The 10 ga. cord had never been used before. My 30 to 15 amp adaptor was
at the female end of the 12 ga. cord, and had no problems. I have
noticed warmth at the connectors of various extension cords in the past.
The cords themselves were not warm, just the plugs.
