Hello GMC.net,
Thank you Mr. David Greenberg on your previous post to me. Your story of driving a GMC for with a total of 600 thousand miles makes me feel that it is not a fragile machine, and that with luck, my wife and I will get thousands of trouble free miles on ours.
Things are going slow (but well) here with my putting in the gauges in my GMC dashboard. (I do a small amount each day after work).
I have a few more questions, since many of you have so much experience, and are willing to share them.
1) As far as wiring the lights on my gauges (3 of them) I wanted to use the headlight rheostat for my power supply. Am I correct in thinking that it is the terminal that is closest to the switch that I pull for the headlights ? The one that is in the white plastic (not the black) Link to photo : light terminals
2) Once my dash was removed I noticed a couple things that I am concerned about.
When I push the brake pedal down it operates two switches simultaneously. PHOTO : brake switches
One of them has a hose going to it (on right side) I believe that hose goes to the cruise control to turn it off when I step on the brake pedal.
The other switch (on left) has a connector on the side of it and a connector on the end of it.The connector on the end is not plugged in. My question is: What does the connector on the end operate ? and should it be plugged in(connected) Everything seems to be working fine, so I am afraid to make the connection in case it was unplugged for a reason.
One more thing, there is a hose just hanging there and it seems that it goes to the compressor motor for the air bags.
Should it be connected to something or just hanging there under the dash like it is ?
3)Now as for my radio/8-track/CB. I would love to keep it but there are a few broken parts and I have decided to replace it. I looked at a few older posts on the birdfeeder and found two options for me. One is Vintage auto radio services, which I would like to go for, but is out of my budget. The other is retrosoundusa, which I am leaning toward. Does anyone out there have a retrosound unit ? If so does it operate as simple as the original. The modern sound decks out there are just too complicated for me. I want to turn it on and then adjust the stuff with a knob or two. As long as in comes with a aux jack for my Ipod (it does) I am good to go.
I researched it online and found that the instructions for the set up of: retrosound model# RC-900C are a little complicated.
My hopes are to find a unit that looks as close to stock as possible with the two knobs and roughly a tight good looking fit, (as close to what originally came with it in 1976).
Any thoughts ?
One more question, If I have other questions (in the next week or so), should I start a new thread, or go back to this one, even if it gets buried several pages back?
Sorry for all the questions, but I do not know who else to ask.
Once again, I must say, It is so nice to have available all the wisdom out there on the GMC motorhome at GMC.net.
Very comforting.
I hope one day I can pay it back in some way.
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Glenn Gardner...G2photosmx.com

Glenn,
I'll try to help with some of your questions but some of them make me
wonder whether you have the wiring diagrams for your coach. They, along
with the complete maintenance manuals, are available at bdub.net. There
are other sources if you prefer them in hard copy or on CD -- just ask.
The wiring diagrams are available in LARGE sizes (as it happens, from my
son). With those, most electrical questions are easily answered.
1. The wiring diagram shows that the dash lights connect to the rheostat
with a 16 gauge Dark Green (16 Dk Grn in "diagram speak") wire. That
probably is the terminal you describe and show in the photo, if you don't
know what wire came from it. With the rest of the wires connected, the
most certain way to be sure is to connect a test light to that terminal and
see what happens when you turn the know.
2. Yes, the hose at the brake pedal switch (valve) is the redundant
release for the cruise control. The electrical switch with the Pink and
Brown wires is the electrical cruise control disengage switch (it's shown
on the wiring diagram but its location is not identified). The switch with
the orange+dark blue and white wires is the stop light switch (again, shown
on the diagram but with no location information).
The dangling hose is meant to dangle. It's just an air inlet for the air
compressor, routed into the cockpit to provide slightly cleaner air (and
maybe keep the dirt daubers out?).
3. With my hearing, or lack thereof, I can't help with your radio search
-- I don't even allow HER to turn on the new one in our new dash. :-(
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/new-dash-panel/p24538-center-console-with-do.html
or

I encourage you to continue in this thread. It's the only way many users
can comprehend what the discussion's about. It's important to remember
that with our dual path mailing list/web site setup, conversations can be
hard to follow at times. Threads are NOT based on the SUBJECT of the
messages -- they follow a hidden identifier. So, if one changes the
SUBJECT on a REPLY, then wanders off onto a new line of discussion, the
thread now contains irrelevant information -- we call that hijacking a
thread -- a big NO NO for most users. (Others of us, GMail for example,
don't notice because our threading IS based on SUBJECT.)
Don't be reluctant to ask anything. Most of us are either trying to learn
from others questions, or are trying to pay back some of what others have
taught us. Others are just hoping some ELSE will ask dumb questions for
them (called LURKERS).
Good luck -- it gets easier! :-)

Mr. Henderson,
Thank you for taking the time to explain everything to me.
The previous owner left me a lot of books, manuals and paperwork.
I have taken the lazy mans route by not spending any time looking through all the books and then trying to comprehend the schematics. I do hope that it is not too rude of me. As I said, "lazy mans route", (kinda hoping someone else would do the hard part for me). Sorry about that.
The center console you created is very nice.
I can't wait to someday be able to see many more different combinations of other peoples GMC's. So many different things that are designed to make their GMCs personal.
We are members of the Sunshine Statesmen GMC club and look forward to our 1st attendance with our GMC. We have already met several members at their last get together of the year last May, in Key Largo, Fl.(we showed up in our car)
We are also hoping that possibly next year of making a journey to one of the bigger rallies up north, to attend some seminars and to see other GMCs, up close and in person.
There are things you just told me about my GMC that I would have not figured out for a very long time, if not at all. I do hope one day to meet you in person, and shake your hand. You have been very helpful.
Thanks again for your time and for explaining the edicate of the forum posts.
I have learned so much in the past few months on the GMC.net and look forward to knowing more & more about our GMC. It is what will make me comfortable when I am on the road and far from home.
Sincerely,

My about-to-be son-in-law didn't know quite what to say the night before
the wedding when I told him and his father that I'd never known what to
call my father-in-law since we'd never discussed it. I told him I didn't
want him in that quandry, so he should call me by my first name: ...
"Colonel". Having no military background, he didn't understand the old
Army joke at all and was more than a little flustered. But his father
almost died laughing.

Larry,
You seem to think it's some kind of conspiracy, it's simply something that guys that have been in the military understand and it's
not really explainable.
It's like when someone asks a Harley owner why they're so popular and they reply; "if you have to ask you wouldn't understand."

Rob M.

This is why we civilians are alway so circumspect of the military!
It's as if I don't have a "need to know."

This is FUNNY! Considering it comes from a guy that dealt with prison parolees!

I still recall meeting Ken for the first time, in person, back in 06. Being an enlisted Air Force guy I had always been somewhat
intimidated by Majors and above. When I saw the big smile on Ken's face, as he was approaching me, all of that went away. Even
though he has been a high ranking fella he is down to earth and happy to share anything with another GMCer. I like that. And,Elaine
is one sweet lady that Teri and I really love to be around.
It is great to attend a convention now and then just to put faces on the folks from here on the net. I really can't say I have ever
been "upset" by another GMCer. Except Ken Burton. He just makes me work too dang hard when he helps me on one of my projects.

Rob, you know what we had drilled into our heads as enlisted grunts. Lts. were actually lower than an Airman but once those captain bars came on, look out.
I recall an e9 telling me once, "watch this". He made 2 butter bars salute him. Was great.
Anyway, sorry to get so far off topic. If you ever see my dash you will probably cringe at the gauges I watch while going down the road. Plus, I keep an ey on my engine, or have Teri watch it for me. Our dog was not happy when she found the glass in the hatch. That had been her spot so she could see out the windshield.
As always, life is good. Doing a week in the GMC starting tomorrow.

I always wondered about that, Rob but simply accepted it.
Now that my wife and I both ride Harleys, I understand!
Suffice it to say, that is similar to the feelings about
the GMC M/H. It's not just the vehicle at all; it's all
the people that are much like an extended family.

Mac,
Quite frankly at the end of the day the GMC is JUST A MOTORHOME (albeit a special one)!
The people I have met and come to know are unique! I have been a member of a bunch of different groups, clubs, organizations, etc.
But none of them can hold a candle to this group of CRAZIES!
HA! I bet you thought I was going to pay all you buggers a compliment! ;-)
Regards,
Rob M.
