How do you get the body side molding rub strip, the black part, off of a 1974? It appears to be held on by a metal retainer strip and if I attempt to pull it off it starts to bend the retainer strip. Does it slide off (forwards or backwards) or is there another trick?

Take one of the end caps off and you should be able to pull the strip out. Start with the door so you can see what it looks like when you get the short strip out. It is as you say, connected, but should slide out.

Sorry Steve must have touched the wrong button and only sent a part reply.
As I started to say my rubber had double sided rug hold down tape.  The only time I delt with screws was the black end clips.  I also caulked with silicon above the stainless with a fine line of calk. I found 1/4" spaces where front connects,  always had wet rugs when it rained.  That Idea corrected my water problem.  Now all new rugs Kool.

Thanks, that answers my question. The MM didn't address this at all. The Parts book gave some hints in the descriptions of the early and later strips on '73 & '74's. A Tech Bulletin gave some more hints.

I didn't wanna try jerking on it to slide it out if that was not how it came out. I'll go tug on it.

The earlier system did not use a metal retaining strip but used double sided tape, as George described, to retain the black rub strip. Between the parts book and the Tech bulletin it can be determined how the strip is retained.

I took some pictures of this today after I pulled the "rub rail" out of the moulding. It came out easily. I hope it goes back in as easily.

I pulled this so I could put in the screws to fix the "chipmunk cheeks". The 3M 5200 held on one side of the GMC but not on the other. I'm gonna put a reinforcing angle on the inside to pull in the sides. Photos will get posted when I get it done.

Steve,

Spray the stainless steel rub rail with some silicone lubricant and enlist
LL's help. If you have two people putting the rub rail isn't bad, one
pullin' and one pushin'.

You might want to order one length for the drivers side, when I took the one
off Double Trouble and left it off a while it shrunk a LOT! I have a new
piece to install; I'll install it when I put Double Trouble to bed for the
winter and leave it hang out the back until I return the next year.

The reason I say only order one piece is you can use the drivers side old
long piece to make the passenger side long piece (door to taillights) and
the long passenger side to make the passenger side front piece (door to
front bumper).

Did I confuse everybody? ;-)

Regards,
Rob M.

Howard,

I got mine from a GMCer that was selling stuff for a widow of a deceased
GMCer.

JimK and Gateway Motorhomes sell it.

Thank You
I'll call Jim K.
All I saw was a full kit on Jim K's site.
I only need the bumper for one side.
