Called Jim K. this weekend and got my Onan latch today. How dumb I was slamming that Onan back in with the latch locked shut.
While sitting back having good thoughts of Jim K. and admiring my repair work, I see my exhaust pipe is burned out, on the Onan, right in the crook before it bolts to the muffler. Who can I call now? I know Jim K. is going to work me to death at Amana for the "free" latch.
Oh well, life is good.

If it is just the pipe, take it to a local muffler shop and have them bend you a new one.

Ken, I wondered about that. The muffler shows no signs of damage but the pipe is burned out right in the "curve" before it clamps to the muffler. The entire pipe is rusty so I bet it crumbles. Had not noticed any excessive noise but we only run it going down the road so can't hear it anyway.

Ken,

IIRC that pipe is an oddball size. Tom Hampton's use a copper sleeve inside
a larger OD pipe.

JimK's appears to have been "expanded" on the ends to fit.

I arranged my pipe so it stirs up less dust in the campground.

Pointed it a little more out than down.

I have to say as well. we have a old timer exhaust guy. that has done plenty of custom exhaust work for alot of hot rods. and I know alot of people that bring stock cars to them with and he custom makes the pipes. and usually charges way less then a chain muffler store.

I had my gmc over there. and he said the pipe was of a size that was not standard for any of his bending equipment.

sent me home. luckily I found out my stuff was not as rusted out everywhere. and i was able to patch it up with my MIG welder for now.

Dan,

I had the same Onan exhaust pipe issue a couple of years ago. The old pipe hadn't started leaking but it was really thin and badly corroded just before the muffler.

Solution: One of Jim K's stainless Onan exhaust pipes.

Highly recommended!

The original Onan exhaust pipe on my coach was 1 1/4" ID. We bend custom exhaust pipes in our business but finding 1 1/4" pipe (and dies) has been a problem.

I bought one years ago from Cinnabar and it wouldn't fit.

What I did with success was to purchase 1 1/4" ID flex exhaust pipe. Not nearly as elegant as a nice properly fitting proper pipe but it works - for a while at least - and it's inexpensive and would be perfect in an emergency situation.. I bought about 4' of the stuff from my local NAPA store the other day, enough to do 2 pipes, for about $10

IIRC, I used chain link fence top rail for 1-1/4" exhaust pipe. I never
had to bend it though. For the Troy-Bilt generator, I too had to resort to
flex pipe.
