I saw a replacement smart stalk for sale at O'Reilley's Auto Parts in Fremont for $40. <http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/miscellaneous-stuff/p44629-smartstalk-for-sale-at-o-reilley-s-for-40.html>

It would be nice, once I buy Ken's electric wipers, and a good Cruise Control to be able to control these all from the blinker stalk. What's involved in making one these work? I suppose it's not as simple as plug-and-play.

Hmm - from looking at the applications list it's got possibilities. Gonna have to take a look at how it mounts and find out what the wiring schematic looks like.

Larry, Chuck Boyd might be able to tell you if it will work. Chuck installed a new steering column for me and he knows what works. I may run down to our local store and see if they have this on their HELP display.

It looks as if this was used on a TON of GM cars from about '84 - '93. The connector looks like it must go to some kind of module that takes shorthand as there are only a few wires going down the pipe.

Sir: I believe if you look at the mounting end of the stalk it is round and is ment to be installed in a wiper switch mounted in the column on later model GM columns. The ones with the blocks made on the upper bearing housing. You need a 80s column for a doner and split it at the tilt joint and marry the 2. The GMC column is prepiratory and is longet than other GM columns but the upper halve will swap and interchange. Here are the basics.
http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Sowers_Steering_Column_Upgrade_Repair.pdf
Most people go ahead and use a Caddy doner as they have the telescopic feature also. If the correct parts are used you can have dimmer, flash to pass, cornering lights, late model cruise switch, delay elec wipers, washer switch and turn signals on the stalk. This is not a hard swap and can be done in the coach unless you have never done it before. If you want all options you will need a Caddy column, dimmer switch off 90 Jeep, turn signal off early Olds with cornering lights, and wiper switch off a Lumina Van. You also will have to make the dimmer rod longer. If you do swap and want to use the stock cruise control I can show yo how to modify your current turn sig lever to replace the tilt lever to retain stock cruise switch.
Good Luck,

I have heard rumors of a switch that is similar but with the flat mounting end with the screw holw in it off a MoParts, but have not seen one.

Larry, That switch is a cruise control switch only. The rest of the plastic is a turnable handles for the wiper/washer.switch mounted in the upper bearing housing.

That makes sense. I looked at wiper controls on RockAuto's website and couldn't make out how they worked. They had such big castings - I now understand.

Larry,

Chuck's told you far more than I know, but if you look on my web site (URL
below) you'll find the electric wiper installation manual. One of the
appendices is a thorough description of how to upgrade to the multifunction
column switch. It was written by Al Hamilton.
