Just ignore the grey wire. Put some electrical tape on the end so it doesn't short against anything, and push it out of the way.

What you described (the dash lights lighting) is normal. It doesn't indicate a malfunction. It's just a wire that you don't need. It was used to light the little dial on older radios, but newer radios don't use it.

You're on!

Of course, the odds of a GMC'er from ID crossing paths with one from NB are a bit slim :) but it's the thought that counts.

True fact: I knew all about the whole grey wire/dash light/4A fuse situation because I cam across it about two days before you did, while wiring in a new stereo. I had wired the grey wire to the ground of the head unit, because grey has to be ground, right? Took me a few days to sort it all out.
