The fresh water tank vent on my beast seems to have been futzed with. I have a vent at the top of the forward side of the tank and a tent on the big inlet hose at back. These have been "teed" together near the front of the tank and a short hose with a bit of screen at end goes up behind the bathroom wall. I have no idea what the original vent looked like. By the look of the water damage, and what I see happening when I fill the tank with the hose fitting, there is considerable spitting of water out of the vent. I'm considering venting this hose outside somewhere like the LP tank compartment but before I start drilling holes I thought I'd ask around. Ideally there should be some way to see the water come out of the vent to let me know to stop filling ... I think.

Any ideas or solutions for me to look at?

Thanks

That little hose tied to the pipe behind the bedroom wall with the screen on its top is the factory installed vent.

I had the same problem when I first got my GMC. When I stuck a hose in the tank fill it would pressurize the tank and force water up the vent and all over the carpet next to the wall.

I solved it by running a hose from the vent fitting on the top of the tank around the back of the motorhome and to the little vent hole that was molded into the fill inlet. My 1977 had an unused vent to the upper left of the tank fill. I tapped it and fitted a brass elbow and attached my tank vent to it. Now when I fill it will spit water out through that vent. When it is full a steady stream will come out.

If your 1975 doesn't have a vent there then you can just make an opening for the elbow.

I ran the vent to the drivers side rear, following the inlet hose, next to the water fill and used a marine fuel vent. When the tank is full, overflow vents right there where I can see it. Of course I had interior panels removed at the time.

Most of us have soaked the floor filling the tank...
I kind of went overboard with a vent arrangement like this.

It does allow filling the tank completely.

What the heck are we looking at, Wally? Would have no idea what that is
designed to do...

Ya it is confusing, The pic is the shower wall panel laying flat with the bottom at the bottom of the pic. In place vertical, the top tube goes thru the floor and is the vent, the center tube off the tee also goes thru the floor and is the vent drain. The other tubes go to the tank vents. In place the pipes and tubes are hidden in the wall like the original. I can fill the tank completely even if not level. It fills to the vent drain height which is above the top of the tank, like original only excess water goes out thru the floor.
I had put the vent tubes down thru the floor with out the contraption but the tank then drained to the level of the bottom of the tank vent connections. I wanted the extra 3/4 inch or so of water in the tank. Considered loops on the vent tubes above the tank before they went thru the floor which probably would have worked too with the possibility of a syphon. The contraption acts as a vacuum breaker so no chance of syphon. The vent thing turned into overkill. Too much time trapped at work thinking about what I could be doing.

Wally, you need a vacation. Come see us.
I have a simple vent line running out the back of the coach. I know the tank is close to full when I hear the vent start "gurgling". Works great. But, I have an "open" line on my 74. I don't fill the tank through "screw on" inlet, just stick a hose in it. We never use the city hookup. I do test it occassionally for leaks. Using the on board tank makes things so much easier, for me. I recently put a quieter pump in.
