Ken, are you not concerned about the edges of the shield puncturing the tank if you have a large impact? I was thinking of a shield that was more like a skid plate that had its edges away from the tank.

Hmmm...That is something to think about. Especially since I paid no
special attention to the upper rear corners of the channel. Off-hand, I'd
be inclined to add a wide protective "shoe" across the top rear of the
channel, with the outer ends turned downward a bit. More than that, it
seems to me, would be providing more protection than OEM, which seems to
have been pretty adequate.
Thanks for the suggestion. When I, soon, replace all the old fuel/vent
lines, I'll do something to that.

The only one I saw like that on a GMC was a piece of angle running full length of the tank with the bottom of the V pointing down. It was bolted to the cross members.
