There has been a lot of coverage here about the fires in Colorado and the west and I was wondering if anyone here lives nearby?

Rob,
That one in Co. Springs is the worst one going. Your route does not
appear to be in jeapardy, yet. The entire SW is enveloped in a heat wave.
That, combined with the drought, makes it prime for extremely high
(highest) fire danger.

Most of the big fires in New Mexico and Colorado have been deep in National Forests, away from towns and cities so there has not been widespread damage. So remote that the largest fire in New Mexico history went almost unreported until the fires started in Colorado. They have wiped out some communities, 224 homes in New Mexico, the recent 300 plus in Colorado.
Bob Raef is from Ruidoso, NM some of which was evacuated. He has been in Lubbock with his wife and has not mentioned the fires.

Though we're fine in the Midwest and away from all these dangerous fires, we do have friends in harms way in Colorado that have been very busy doing what they can to protect their property from the flames. Our prayers are with them.
One thing that I always liked about owning a GMC is the fact that it would afford you an option if you would have to evacuate an area and could provide shelter. Whether it's a fire out west or a hurricane down south, you have an option.
As someone once said, if you have a GMC, you're not homeless.

Things change very rapidly. There are now 8 separate fires in Colorado.
In the last two days an estimated 346 homes have been destroyed by Colorado Springs.
Another 257 destroyed by Ft. Collins.
Both fires are still burning and more homes are expected to burn.
One of the GMC Mountainaires has been evacuated from the Ft. Collins fire but we don't know about their house yet.

Don't know about New Mexico, BUT . . . . .
Waldo Canyon fire does seem to be going to take out the Air Force
Academy and the city of Colorado Springs.
The High Park fire near Fort Collins - 81,000 acres and something line
350 homes burned.
Each of these fires has only killed about one person - so far.

Richard Waters has a portion of his website at <www.palmbeachgmc.com> that is called "GMC as a Lifeboat".
The idea is there, but last time I looked it didn't have much.
If I lived someplace disaster prone, I would keep the water and fuel tanks full and a load of non-perishable provisions onboard.

My wife and I have been on a trip that took us from Louisville, KY through
OKC to Albuquerque (yes, Emery, we made it to Santa Fe) then on to North
Rim, West Yellowstone, Billings, Sheridan, and now near Rapid City. In the
last 20 days I've seen smoke on the horizon from five fires. Highway 212
in Wyoming was closed last night because of fire. Greatest concern to us
is what's going on in Colorado. The air was very hazy when traveling
yesterday from Sheridan, WY to Sturgis, SD. The further east we came from
Montana the greener it has gotten but it is still very dry all over.
In three national forests/parks no open flames are permitted. Sadly,
however, I did see a fresh cigarette butt on the ground along a path in
one of those forests. I guess some people don't understand what an open
flame is. One ranger I met is telling people that it you must smoke a
cigarette, do it in your car and don't through the remains outside the car.

GMC's are good for earth quakes out here as well. You always have a home, and it is cheap to have one of these.
I had my place burn to the ground in Santa Cruz, ca. lost every thing but an autographed book of einstein that
was in a suit case in the corner of the closet in the last corner to be burnt. When the wind is high there is no way to stop these fires.
The only thing you can do is forget about it and start all over. the suit case was burnt, the only thing left in the whole house was the book.
strange that it was the only thing left and it was a little crispy around the backing in the corner of the suit case. Relativity survived.

Same with us the only thing that was saved we had in briefcase under our
bed.
Our home was on the ground in less then 45 minutes.
The fire started with a "Fresh" green Christmas tree.
The tree was fresh cut eight days before the fire.
Our Christmas tree now comes out of a box,

I agree. Our motorhome was an excellent sanctuary when we were evacuated
twice during the SE AZ fires last year.
