Hi,
I'm new to this site and my wife and I are considering buying a GMC motorhome that is for sale where we live. I was wondering if I could get some opinions as to if this is a fair price or not? I haven't seen the motorhome yet but I did talk to the owner and he said it would require new tires before it could be used since the tires are 10-15 years old. I was thinking of upgrading the rims right away to Alcoa or Eagle rims. So adding it all up (tax, license, tire, rims) I figure it would cost me about $5500-$6500 just to be able to drive it home.
Any thoughts?
Here are the basic details on this particular coach:
* 1976 model year
* 26'
* 455 Toronado engine
* approximately 98K miles

I purchased it in Michigan about two years ago and drove it to Madison, Wisconsin. I had big plans to restore it for family trips but simply got overwhelmed with my young family and couldn't find the time to get started. It's been in covered storage since then. I have very little history with it so most of what I know is from simple observation and inspection. The seller claimed it was stored outside for 7-8 years but drove it semi-regularly on short trips. Virtually all items appear to be original. I made a few repairs to get it mobile but a fair amount of work still needs to be done to make it reliable.

I would really investigate what he means by " a fair amount of work still needs to be done to make it reliable". I bought one for that amount a year ago and with the same "reliable" line in the deal. It looked pretty good. Got it home barely, 100 mile trip. Look it over well, brakes, oil, trans and especially the steering. Expect suprises. Good luck.

Welcome to the net..
The asking price is more than fair -- based on the brief description and photos -- if the coach is sound. By that I mean, the frame and drivetrain need a close inspection. While we could direct you to photos and write-ups on what to look for it might be best if someone local could look at the coach with you, especially the frame and running gear.

Bob: welcome ... The coach looks like it is worth the money. If you know your way around a tool box you should be ok. Tires for sure, one blow out and it can do a lot of damage. Things to look for. Rust on the frame specially around rear bogie mount and front frame specially under batterys. Rubber brake lines for hardness and good chance of intrnal swelling. Gas lines, it is rubber from tanks inside drivers side frame rails and short line to fuel pump on engine. Before you actually drive it any distance I would change the fuel filter in the carb and consider adding an inline clear filter in the rubber line in frame rail. this is the place to ask ???. The only dump question is the one you don`t ask. Good luck.

I agree with Dennis, since it has sat outside for quite a while in Michigan, definitely check the frame for rust especially where any sections overlap and the bogies attach.
Also, get the VIN and get it to J.Shot, he might be able to tell you how long the owner owned it that stored it outside in Micihganand if it is originally from the rust belt.

You never know what you have until it is yours.
the price seems fair. and the pictures show that it could possibly be able to be used as is(cosmetically). You sound like you have some idea of what you might be getting into. I think your figures reflect what it should take to get it trustworthy for normal use. There could always be surprises. and there are lots of places you can spend money on to blow a budget right out of the water.
I think you numbers also reflect doing the work yourself. if you plan on having someone else change fuel hoses, do the bearings, and whatnot. you have to double that price.
everybody has their own idea of the word "reliable". I would think it costs tens of thousands to really be able to state that a GMC reliable. new engine(even those fail), new tranny, every system been gone through with a fine tooth comb. I consider my GMC very usable. and it surprises me every trip how well it does. but I do not have the budget to replace everything I would like to right out of the gate.
the key thing is safe. Make sure you have good fluids. make sure the rubber stuff is in good shape or new.(brake, fuel, air, hoses, tires, ect..). Make sure your brakes and bearings are good. I hear of alot of problems with the fuel systems. so that might be something else to really check out. and of course the rust would be a deal breaker.
I think your price estimate is close to correct. I think I have about $1000-$2000 into my GMC making it road worthy. another $2000 into it making it easier to use.(macerator, storage pod, batteries, solar, ect..).
I have been using mine for almost 2 years now. about two years more then I thought I would be able to use it, when I first flatbedded my gmc home. I fix and upgrade stuff on the fly. and do not drive it further then the 200 miles that AAA will tow me home. knocking on wood right now. I have avoided that. Lots of great memories, and about the best way to travel around. well worth the time and money investment.

Hi Robert, your wife really needs to be on board before you consider this purchase; I'd really look around before you decide on this "one." An old friend w/a GMC said "we all have $25,000 coaches, and this could be about true in this case if you need a new frame, Alcoas and tires, Jim Bounds motor, etc. etc. Air conditioners, troll, tranny, steering box, front end work, brakes, air system, paint, interior and so forth all need to be evaluated.
Not trying to scare you, but it all needs to be considered, especially if you are unable to do the work yourself. It gets very expensive. There are a lot of them out there for sale. Just sayin'...

the wifes can be tricky. I had to sell a 4 wheeler that i had, to pay for the GMC when I bought it. Saying my wife was not happy is an understatement, but she could not say too much when I did not use our savings to buy it.
I also thought that day, I might have to move into the gmc when she kicked me out of the house for buying the gmc. It sorta pushed me into the mode of fixing it quickly to a point of workability.
but now after owning it for two years. her camping in it the first trip where she didn't have to be in the wet tent after it rained. to be able to stand up to change clothes. and hot water on demand. she loves it. she actually asked me since I have to work this friday till noon. and she is off. if I would be ok to have her drive it to the campground, and I meet up with her and the kids later. I fell over.
the gmc is unique. but it is a good unique. Your wife should like it.
bring her into a full fledged RV place. and show her all the price tags on everything else. and ask to show her a couple repair invoices from that RV shop. that will help too.

Other folks here on the list can (and probably will)
chime in with advice on evaluating it.
The fact that the interior appears to be in really nice
condition (pictures can fib, I know) but having the
interior be in "livable" and "presentable" condition
is a good start in obtaining willing approval from SWMBO
(She Who Must Be Obeyed!
Check the tires' manufacturing date. That is a 4-digit
label just after the "DOT" label. The first two digits
are the year and the last two are the week of that year.
If the tire labels show less than five years old, you
should not have any problem taking it home. However, you
have already been told that they are too old.
My coach came with 16" chromed steel wheels, but I have
now put alloy wheels on. I bought XD Rock Star (chrome)
dually wheels for my coach; two wheels each month until
the job was complete to spread expenditures. Cost was
about $470 per pair, mounted and balanced at Discount Tire.
I like 'em and have attached a picture that I will send
to you as a cc: address.
I put on BF Goodrich Commercial TA 16LT225 tires, one of
the most recommended tires here in the group. The six of
them ran under $950, mounted and balanced; again at a
Discount Tire store.
I suspect you can find one or more GMCers in your area
of Madison, WI who can come by to give at least a semi-
professional evaluation so that you can avoid buying a
real lemon mechanically.

I was in the same situation as Bob. I'm very mechanical, have the time, and wouldn't have minded finding a "fixer-upper" and doing some wrench-twisting to get it to the point where it was perfect (for my needs, not to the stratospheric level of craftsmanship that some have taken their coaches to).
But like Bob, I had to get the wife on board with any purchase. I seemed to find a dozen candidates that were all Palm Beach models, but the idea of that much green in one place put her off her feed, so those were out. We saw others that were in decent condition, but needed some sprucing up and paint. Nope, that wasn't gonna do it either.
And after reading voluminously about the cost of fixing up an "already nice" GMC, I realized that I'd be better off just putting the money into one that already had the upgrades I was looking for (newer motor, tranny, generator, paint, Alcoas, newer tires and appliances, etc.). I think it worked out pretty well - I don't think I could bring the average $5-10k coach to the condition my '78 Royale is in for what I paid for it.

The down side of my approach is that I got into paralysis by analysis mode, and ended up looking at literally dozens of rigs (most virtually). In the end, the right one popped up not TOO far away, and I took a chance and drove over to check it out. It helped that the seller had taken dozens of hi-def photos of the coach. It was also a HUGE help that the GMC registry had info on the previous owner (who'd just sold it to the guy I bought it from), so I was able to get a detailed description of the actual condition of the rig from a guy who had no reason to sugar-coat anything.
In the end, the GMC approach will cost a bit more than a SOB, but you'll end up with a rig that's got style, handles circles around just about anything else out there, and that won't depreciate at 10-15% per year. And you get the advantage of a rabid user group to help you through any rough patches.

When I was looking into buying a motor home, my number one preference was a GMC. I called a friend of mine, who is in the tire business, to ask a tire related question. When I told him what I was looking to buy, he said "WHY"? Then said "Oh, never mind, I guess I really don't need to ask". He is into street rods, and has a brother who is into Jeeps, so I guess he had some idea why someone would prefer a certain kind of unique motor home.
My wife was reluctant to give her blessing, at first, too, thinking that we wouldn't be able to use it enough to justify the expense, until we retire in 10 - 15 years. We have owned our coach for almost four years now, and she LOVES it. We belong to a couple of GMC clubs and that gives us an excuse to use it regularly for rallies. We love to travel in general, and flying is getting to be sooo inconvenient, we try to use the GMC for at least three out of four trips these days.
Unfortunately for us, we bought the GMC just before the prices came down on them, and although we bought a beautiful, upgraded well maintained coach, it had been untouched mechanically. I have been upgrading and spending money on it ever since, and don't even want to admit how much time and $$$ I have into it. I would trust driving it anywhere though and will continue to improve it to that end.
Anyway, Good luck with the potential purchase. Be careful to not make up your mind up before you even see it (like I did) and keep your options open. I only looked at two other coaches before I made up my mind (from pictures and descriptions) that this was the coach for me. After the first one, I concluded that it was going to be a 'pay me now, or pay me later' proposition. I have no regrets other that hearing from my wife, from time to time, that we could have (maybe) gotten a better deal if we'd waited a little longer.

Well anyways it looks like you have a great time with Lunch bunches. Sure
would be nice if the other GMC'rs up in our neck of the woods would
commit to such.. We have talked about it but no action.

you know I thought when I get older (that thinking was when I was in my
teens) I should have all sorts of time to spend with
my children's children and be able to sit on a porch swing and watch the
world go by. It seems my grandpa did this when he
retired at 65 and was laid back - easy going. He sat around the radio with
his buddies and listened to guys like Hank Snow.
Well now I have passed that Golden Age and trying hard to schedule in all
the things I have to do to do.
Still working and probably will continue to do so for some years to come.
However this coming August I am hosting
an awesome Cascaders White Rock rally then a rolling rally across Canada
and back thru the States. Gone for 3 months.
A few are doing the rolling rally with us. So watch out we might be coming
to your place in the future.

Bob, there's a very nice coach for sale in Madison. They're asking $20k for it, but it's got a long list of very nice upgrades. I spent some time talking to the owner about it, and would have crawled over/under/through it if it was closer than the other side of the country. You'd have to be a serious Badger fan to leave the paint job as-is though...

Could you buy the sub $4K coach and bring it up to this standard for $20k total? Probably not. But could you buy the $4K coach, spend a reasonable amount of money on the basics and still enjoy the heck out of it? Almost certainly.
