Kerry Tandy need to have someone in the area to refer him to a repair shop
in the area to help direct him to a local shop that will treat him properly.
He and Leann have served in the GMC community for many years and are on the
last trip to Arizona.
Jim B called me to assist as his computer is down.
Kerry like me get little rattled when we have problems on the road , so we
need to assist him if we can.
Don Adams has contacted him and left him a message.
Don also contacted another GMCer in the area that is mechanically capable.

Thanks Jeff

Kerry was North of Carrollton. The serpentine belt on his Chevy engine had come off, got it back on. The pulley was well fastened to the fan baldes, but the whole assembly wobbled quite a bit. Must be the mounting plate on the end of the water pump shaft broken loose.
Kerry was able to drive it slowly without pwr steering to an RV park a few miles away. In for the night.

There is a RV shop that has worked on GMC's a few miles up the road. Don't know if they will be open tomorrow or not.

Jim Bounds and Jim Kanomata really go out of their way to help GMC'rs. And offered any support they could provide, even though it is a Chevy engine. They looked me up from the directory as maybe closest, even though as a newbie, I'm not on the Black List yet. Support your vendors, never know when your gonna need 'em.

Greetings:

I am interested to know if anyone has any more information about this Chevy engine – Specifically, which one and how the oil pan “issue” was addressed.

Also, how was the front mounting modified to accommodate, guessing here, a side (not front) support.

Thanks for any thoughts you might have or know.

Hey Carl
I know nuttin', but I sure like that single belt.

I sent you a PM with Kerry's cell number. I believe a PO installed the engine, so Kerry may not know all the efforts/modifications necessary.

I'm pretty sure Jim Bounds could tell you about it.

Ferguson knows about it too. Maybe he will jump in and tell us all about it.

Don & Carl:

Changed the header so folks don’t think they are still stranded in TX!

Don – Thanks for the number – I’ll give Kerry a call – A serpentine belt is an added bonus and I would like one as well…. Just not 800/1000$ as well, which is about the “cheapest?” single belt setup I could find.

Carl – Cool, maybe Ferguson/Bounds will jump in.

What I’m really looking for is “twenty seven eight-by-ten color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one” that tells me just what was involved in the conversion/installation.

Personally, I’d like to put a Chevy 350 Ram Jet crate engine in my GMC – It's NEW, roller cam, MEFI 4 controller, and 400 ft/lb @ 3500RPM – Sounds good to me - But getting it all to “fit” is way beyond my skill set.

Now if it were a kit….

Anyway, thanks for the input.

Kerry's Chevy crate motor came with that serpantine belt system.  It was designed by GM, it works pretty good until something gets out of kilter.  Kerry did not install the motor, it was done with a great deal of money and gumption and it has served Kerry well but just like the Diesel GMC we built (did a 23 and a 26), the engineered chassis with OBDII, ABS and all the documentation to allow any Workhorse dealer to work on and have parts, it cost $65,000 for the rolling chassis!  You have to go all the way or forget it if you want to modify your drive train and continue to have a reliable machine!  The Chevy set up in Kerry's coach is awesome but when things go wrong as in the issues right now-- good thing Kerry and Leanne didn;t have to be somewhere on time and they look at the drive as part of the journey!

Always be thinking but don't limit your options in on the road repair.  No matter what vehicle Kerry's motor was in, there would still be a belt issue, it goes with the motor.  Don't complicate your life trying to adapt this to your 455 or 403, to don;t work!

As far as swapping in a 454 or 8.1 chevy motor into a GMC, I think Dyno Sources has flogged that horse to death, the "kit" they produced was a nightmare-- I know I did one!  Cherish and support your 455 or 403, they really are great motors and you or someone else can fix them!

The 6.0 is up to the task, you will not be happy with the smaller
displacement SBC.

Jim,

You are 100% correct about Dyno Sources 8.1 but, Dave Lenzi's is a work of art!
