G'day,

To make up for me not realizing that 3 ton jack stands are not rated high enough for the rear end of a GMC I would like to advise
that Harbor Freight has their 6 ton jack stands on sale for $39.99.

<http://www.harborfreight.com/6-ton-jack-stand-set-38847.html?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2512b&utm_source=1003>

I've put a < in front and a > behind the link to see if that keeps it "clickable."

Email and Forum users please let me know if it worked or not.

Here's a Tiny URL link for the stands just in case it doesn't work:

http://tinyurl.com/83yz7mj

Regards,
Rob M.

Tim,

Thanks, that URL was 113 characters long. I will start using the < and > around all my links.

Worked fine on the email list, Rob. I don't use the forum.

If I counted correctly the first line of your message
contained 128 characters, a bit less than the URL.

Glad you found the hidey hole in Outlook to allow
longer line length.

Reading messages is still easier if you hit the return/enter
key about the time you get to the 55 - 60 character point.

Now we are left to wonder if these jackstands will hold 6 tons
each or the 6 ton rating is for the pair!

I also note that you will have to lift the frame to at least
15.125 inches to get these jackstands under there!

They also don't have the safety pegs to lock the extendable
piece in place!

You can see "6 ton" cast in to the upright piece.
There is a locking tab that can be bent in. It is also on the rest of the pictures.

Mac,

I copied this from the HF catalog ad for these jack stands, since they repeat it three times I'd say it's safe to assume they
support 12,000 pounds total. ;-)

Quote

David,

The locking tab just keeps the upright support from coming out of the base. The Torin jack stands that Mac has have a triangular
piece that slides in between the teeth which provides a redundant locking system, the ratchet and the triangular piece.

I modified one of my three ton HF jack stands to have the same feature:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6101-jack-stand-security-pin-mod.html

Mac and I have both noted that one could assume that meant that ONE jack stand would support 6 tons. BruceH up in Canada and I both
asked Torin if a single jack stand would support 6 ton or was it the pair, neither one of us got an answer, to date.

Regards,
Rob M.

I've been using these stands while working under The Beast with no problems (Except I bought them before the sale).

Regardless of the capacity of these stands, I think I would like some other blocking, such as the 2x4's, just in case.

I just picked up a set of the 12-ton stands, too. I actually stood in Harbor Freight doing calculations in my head to see if the 3-ton stands would actually do the job... then I pictured myself squashed like a bug under my rig, and spent the extra $15. Rolling Eyes

I remembered this discussion Saturday when I was out
it the garage. I pulled the weight-bearing top out
of my "3-ton" jackstands. The following is cast into
one side of the top section:
___
3
T
O
N
_

To me, that claims that EACH stand is rated at 6,000#.

Mac,

I'm sorry but I disagree. I never got a response from Torin when I asked them whether their 3 TON jack stands were rated at 3 TON
each or total, however, I did some more research into the Harbor Freight 3 TON jack stands.

They are marked just like your Torin 3 ton jack stands.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/jack-stand-security-pin-mod/p44502-hf-1.html

In the ad for them on the Harbor Freight website they state: " Capacity: 6000 lb."

http://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-heavy-duty-jack-stands-38846.html

I downloaded the manual which resolves this question 100% as it notes:

Capacity 3 Tons (6,000 lb.)*
Height Range (Approximate) 11-3/4" - 16-3/4"
*Evenly distributed across two Jack Stands.

http://manuals.harborfreight.com/manuals/38000-38999/38846.pdf

Rob M.

I don't find any gov't regulation for jack stand marking ('tho' it would be
amazing if there's not one), but this WalMart ad is probably definitive,
and confirms Rob's conclusion 6000# per PAIR:

Ken,

This is interesting, I reckon Harbor Freight and Wal Mart have been lurking here! Both of them have responded to Mac's observations.

I don't find any gov't regulation for jack stand marking ('tho' it would be
amazing if there's not one), but this WalMart ad is probably definitive,
and confirms Rob's conclusion 6000# per PAIR:

Each jack stand has a 3 ton label on it. If it was only half that capacity it would be labeled so.
