My driver's side air bag pumps up normally and holds well. However, it will not release pressure when the control switch is set to the down position. With the air bag removed, I find a 4 inch piece of hose attached to the exhaust port of the height control valve and the end appears to be cut, but I don't find a loose end of a hose that might have been connected to it. I have three hoses in the clamp on the wheel well wall and all are connected.

I don't find any good pictures of the connections and what pictures I do find in my downloaded copy of the manual are too dark to see much detail.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Steve,

There is the system overview by Duane..

http://gmcws.org/Tech/dsimmons/air_suspension/air-suspension-system.html

The exhaust port tubing just evacuates to the atmosphere -- a short length of tubing.

There is a good chance that the switch by the dash has dirt in it.

Carefully remove the switch after unplugging it (note the orientation of the plug so you don't replace it backwards).

When you have the plug out you can pry open the little tabs on the bottom and take it apart. Be sure to see how the parts are put together. Clean out the grease and dirt and them clean the contacts. After putting in the center rocker piece put a small dab of grease on the center. Squeeze the tabs back into place and it should work better.

The way the top of the switches are exposed to dust and dirt the have to be cleaned every few years.

Sully told me that is frequently caused by
dirty electrical contacts in the switches on
the control panel. I had the same experience
after he installed my new air bags and a few
cycles of the switches cured it for me.

As was stated, but may not have been clear. The short hose you see is just exactly the way it supposed to be. It is just a bit of tube for the exhaust air from the valve. It keeps dirt out of the actual valve mechanism.
