Just finished my 77 coca cola today, the whole thing front, back and sides.
Best method for me was a pinstripe eraser available from auto paint
suppliers (get a pack of 6 you’ll need them) and about 2 days time. I made
holes/slots in the stripes with the eraser, then brush coated with
oops/goo-gone for about a 5-10 minute soak and finally used a ˝ inch drill
(900 rpm) with the eraser. You can run the erasers as fast as 4,000 rpm so
it may take less time but you’ll use more product. Forget the heat gun and
plastic scraper on old stripes.

Good Luck,

Ed,

Do you think something like this 6-pack of 4” erasers would be a good start for removing the stripes from the hoods of my Palm Beach?

Those are the ones you need.
Be careful not to heat up one section for too long, you will harm the fiberglass. Wear a particle mask.

The best method would depend on the type of stripes.

I have not removed GM installed stripes (yet) like the ones that were on your "Coke" but the ones installed my 1978 Birchaven (Coachman Product) came off well with a heat gun and plastic "razor" blades.

The after-market stripes on my '73 came off fairly well with a pressure washer. Smile I still need to remove some adhesive... I have used Goo-Gone but now just use acetone. Seems that is what Goo Gone is... mostly.

It looks like the half the stripes on my '77 Birch are like GM installed stripes, the rest are something else. Neither type look that easy to remove. I might need to pick up some erasers at least for the GM style stripes on the front section.

Gene,

I’m afraid I’d dig in to the paint with something like that. Is it fairly forgiving?

I have one of those.

While it worked on the Coachman (vinyl?) stripes it was a lot slower than a heat gun and harder to keep out of the paint on non-flat areas. (Mostly only and issue on the stripes from the sides to the front.) I might dig it back out and try it on the "odd" stripes on my '77 Birch. They are on mostly flat areas and those stripes do not seem to hold themselves together as well as the '78 Coachman stripes.

Larry, you just try to keep the blade at as shallow an angle as possible to reduce the possibility of digging into the paint. Go slow allowing the blade to warm-up the adhesive.

Note to anyone with a late '78 coach:

The paint on the last few coaches isn't as strong as the paint found on most other GMC's. When removing stripes it is very easy to pull up the paint. Any imperfection and the paint pulls right up. I found "lots" of repaired paint runs in my original factory paint.

If I had it to do again, instead of removing the faded stripes I would have just wiped the color off of them with acetone. Leaving clean white vinyl stripes. I suppose they could then be painted with some kind of "plastic" paint if you wish.
