G'day,

It's cold, damp, and rainy here in Sydney and I've been surfing the web and
stumbled on to this adhesive:

http://3mcollision.com/3m-panel-bonding-adhesive-08116.html

Might be good for us, however, it ain't cheap!

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRM-8116/

Plus it requires this special gun:

Hello Rob,
That product looks very interesting. A shame that 3M insist on you having to buy something else, before you can use it. I recently bought a couple of tubes of epoxy for metal, wish i had seen that tho. Seems like for the alum body panels/frame it would be just the ticket. Be worth paying for the gun, just to know its stuck 4 ever, rather than buying an inferior product.
Nope i do not work for 3M, but maybe they will give me a discount now, 'Just Kidding'. Well guess i had better go feed the Roo. Smile

cheers and beers

interesting as well.

With all this talk of PL-259's and coax I thought that the greatest thing since floating handheld GPS's should be mentioned. Coax Seal! Coax Seal is a material that looks like a long thin black fruit roll up. All you do is wrap a layer of it over whatever you want to seal, press it around the joint and the joint is now completely waterproof. The joint can then be wrapped in electrical tape to hold the coax seal in place or wrapped in solid plastic tape and then electrical tape to really protect the joint. The connection can even be taken apart later on and re-sealed using the same Coax Seal. Even better, it doesn't deteriorate in the sun. ( although I usually put a piece of tape over it ) Normally, it is used to seal the junction between a PL-259 and a PL-258 in an outdoor application. However it's uses on a boat are many. On "Ca Ira" :

1. It is used to seal the joint between the VHF cable and the through deck

fitting ( the standard PL-259 to PL-258 application I mentioned above ).

2. To seal all the exterior PL-259 to PL-258 fittings for the Ham radio on

the boat. ( standard usage again )

3. To seal the electrical openings in the pulpits that feed the running

lights.

4. To waterproof the cable flange for the boats primary ground cable.

5. To seal a small opening behind one of my running lights.

6. To completely seal the common ground connections for the mast lights

where they come together at the base of the mast.

7. To seal wire openings at the masthead.

Here's a link to an ad for Coax Seal: http://www.wavehunter.com/coaxseal.htm

I love this stuff,

I had the opportunity to try the 3M product after misjudging a narrow driveway opening and tearing off one of my newly installed Ramco mirrors a couple of years ago.

It works great and was recommended to me by my friend who has a fiberglass shop. It worked great to bond the torn mirror mounting area back together, and then I used it in other areas to repair cracks (on my generator compartment door) with great results.

Yes, you do have to use the gun, and that does bring the cost up, but the 3M product is the way to go in repairing these panels from my experience.

I use this everyday in the body shop. Used to bond roofs, side panels etc. Excellent product, would work well for our application.
Of course I don't pay for it and already have the gun. Very Happy

I used this for all of the structural repairs on the WarPig. We have been using it for about a decade for bonding quarter panels/ roof and door skins. This product is unique as far as cross bonding adhesives go as it has small glass beads in it to prevent over compression when parts are clamped in position. Never had it fail.
