Hi all update:
I called shop to pick it up or so... he had to look and called back and
left me a message:
they said they are in my unit $575 (not really sure what all that is!!!!
replaced some wires I know.) wow at whatever shop rate $100 is 5 hours
looking into it! I never really told them to do anything. I should have
asked for estimate first? my mistake maybe? hummm
says also needs new control board... points, condensor, plugs, plug wires,
basic tune up stuff!! hummm
so what you all suggest? I have to pay $575??? shop is good generator
company in area really many rv's or all go there!

Mike,
No use confirming that you SHOULD have asked for an estimate or set a
firm expenditure limit before leaving it. Now, you probably have no
recourse but to pay or bail; the robber's going to win. SHOULD be a
lesson to all of us -- I've often left myself open to such a heist;
just never suffered it.
That money would be better spent on a replacement generator, IMHO.
Let them keep it.

are there other generators that will fit in there?
they claim this unit is unique to GMC's and if fixed has a lot of value?

duane simmons could have fixed that if he just looked at it.
if you had his dvd you could have done it your self.
get the warranty in writing at least. Check the paper work for errors.
try and get a receipt if you can get one. . Go to the dress store and get an arm off a dummy
and when you pay him, give him the arm and a leg if you really want too.
this article on Darren Paget states the old onan weigh 512 pounds he replaced it with
onan microlight 2800 - which weighs 110 pounds, Note article. 400 pounds less to carry.
When they say $100 an hour ask if that includes coffee breaks. Keep in mind your gmc is on their property if you
have a problem they have the key. If you are at $500 get the gmc after they tell you what they did - get duanes dvd
and use 12 volts till you get the dvd. Save the other $500 they are going to say you have to spend for now you have to
buy new or give them the same amount as a new one, save 100 dollars is trigger point. Times are rough and so is business.
i would call early morning and stop them and go and see what they say, go on here and ask what to do with Jim k or Jim b, and see.
then buy something for them to pay them back for telling you the truth. I have the same problem treat everyone like family. Not.

#1 - look here and if you are at all interested in working on the simple Onan - buy the DVD <http://www.gmcws.org/Tech/dsimmons/dsimmons.html>
Do you have an urgent need for the generator? Remember that the house batteries will charge off of the engine alternator and the charger/converter (hopefully you’ve replaced the buzz box) and you can live large off of 12 volts (except for the roof air). If you camp with hookups then the generator would only be used on the way.
I think it’s time for a dialog with this shop. At this point they must be able to offer a firm quote to get the thing running, and then you can make up your mind. If they can’t give you a firm quote by now, then I’d suggest negotiating the lowest price that will get your rig out of hoc.
If you have some shade-tree mechanic skills grab the Onan DVD and get to work. It’s a very simple machine and there a lot of folks here to help. Then again, I’ve been guilty of fixing my coach with some of the tools in my check-book! Do what you are comfortable with - swapping out the Onan for a modern generator is a modification - and each one is different.

They are just throwing parts at it and running up the bill.
What was wrong with it when you took it in? I doubt it needs all of the things you listed. I would get out of there as soon and as cheap and as possible. After that we here on GMCnet will help you get it running.
Ask for all of the removed parts when you leave.

Quite a few sets will fit in that space. You can find and buy new, or modify a contractor one or whatever 9See Ken H's setup). I know the Generac RV series will fit, I have one in my 23'... but I don't recommend Generac.
Tell the shop you're aware the things are worth thousands, and consequently, all they have to do is give you their check for those thousands, less 30% markup and less the however much you owe them.
An expensiove lesson learned.

As others have mentioned, you can fit other generators into the space with some work. I have an Onan Microlite 2800 from my old motorhome sitting in my garage. It would fit nicely into the space, but it's too small for my GMC's dual A/Cs and electric water heater. Of course, if I can't get my GMC's Onan to run reliably, the Microlite might have to be an option.
Just a side note on my Microlite 2800--I bought it in 1995, and it was a nice, reliable generator up until about 900 hours. Then the muffler broke, the carburetor started having problems, and some mice took up residence in it one winter. I tore it down, replaced a bunch of expensive parts, cleaned it up, and got it running well again. I keep telling myself that if I can get a relatively modern Onan running, I can get an ancient Onan running as well.
Of course, it's a lot easier to heft a 110-pound Microlite onto the workbench than a 500-pound barbarian.

Mike, I had a 2800 Microlite Onan in my 230 with one A/C. It would not run both the hot water heater and the A/C at the same time. Even when the A/C was on it would falter when a "heavy" load was added. I went to Miquel's and swapped it for a 4000 Microlite and I am happy with its performance. It runs ALL the items plugged in as well as the A/C and water heater at the same time. No more choosing = A/C in the hot evening falling asleep or hot water in the morning. It all works beautiful now.
Your mileage may vary = 8 to 10 mpg.

Mickey, I have 4.5 kw 40G Generac. It's priced right, economical and I have
had no trouble with it. Fitted it into the generator bay on my 23

Best fit in 26' generator space is the Honda ev6010. Fits well, and has everything that one could ask for in a RV genet. Getting hard to find, but worth the time and effort. Check eBay and Craig's List. There is a firm in Florida that does complete rebuilds, if you have deep pockets. Parts are readily available. California killed this genet with CARB rules. Honda decided to quit, in stead of fixing the problem.
Several people have Honda installed. Check photo site.
By the way, I install mine next week.

It might need all that to have a full restore type repair. There is probably in reality only one thing that is causing the real problem. Proper troubleshooting should lead one to that problem.

Hello,
I would try and get a clean used one. Then you would have the other one for spares. Looked up the prices of onans and they are astronomical. Add shipping and thats gonna blow your head off..... Hope you get it sorted out to your satisfaction.
I have an onan here , works, needs a few things. Oil pan gasket, is the major thing, cos it leaks oil. Oh well.........

They may be legitimate, but as someone mentioned, it appears they are just standing around scratching their asses and throwing parts at it hoping it will run. If you've got it and are willing to take a trip to Palmyra WI (I am 50 miles from the MATC Truax campus) we can take a look at it.
I'm not an "expert" but I have gotten my dead Onan running by cleaning up the fuel system and repairing my control board and the remote wiring. I have all the manuals, repair hints and Simmons DVD and will be willing to take a look at it with you. There are some quick and easy checks to determine if the problem is on the control board or somewhere else. I have all the tools and test instruments that might be needed, even a few spare parts. These things are Neanderthal beasts and actually very simple once you get past the control board.
I'm around most weekdays (retired), many Sundays, but never on Saturdays (I volunteer at the East Troy Electric Railroad Museum).

Steve, mine needs a new oil pan gasket as well. Look up the price of a new gasket. Talk about astronomical.
I found a new oil pan gasket among all of the parts my coach's PO sent with me. It's a bit bent up and might not seal well, so I'm thinking about getting some gasket material from Napa and tracing out a new one.
