Been reading this site for nearly a year now.
Lots of good information. And you guys seem to always have the answer.
So here goes:
I have a 76 Birchaven 23ft. all original except for carpet and seatcovers.
We took her to Hershey last year and showed her in the AACA show and was awarded HPOF (Historical Preservation of Original Features)
We have been really enjoying traveling with our "short yellow bus" .
Now for the problem:
The toilet is leaking. It is an Aqua Magic model GH
From what I can tell it is leaking at the vacuum breaker.
Unfortunately I can't see how to take it apart to find out for sure.
Went looking on the web but found nothing for a model GH nor anything even close
Anyone out there have any thoughts on where to find a manual or how to take the top off to enable seeing inside?
Appreciate any help

I haven't done it on the GMC but I recently pulled the toilet on my 75 Airstream trailer. Looks like the same thing. Getting it out isn't too big a deal. Getting it back it is a b**ch.
The toilet is held in place by two "closet bolts", one in the right front under the foot pedal and the other in the left rear. The front one comes out pretty easily. For the back one the instructions say to put your hand through an access hole in the back. Unless the hole is a lot bigger in the GMC than the Airstream or your hands are a lot smaller than mine it won't work. Pry off the access hole cover on top at the left rear. Then, using a quarter inch drive socket with a couple of extensions and a universal get a socket seated on the nut. The biggest problem is trying to see through the little hole around the tools and find the nut.
After you get it off and fix the leak (repair parts are available on-line but aren't cheap) then you get to reinstall it. Again, the left front nut is easy. I'm still working on the rear.
Good luck

Hi Denny:
Back when we still had the old "Stink pot",
I used a 1/4" flexible extension with socket and ratchet for the back nut
and internal ratchet wrench on the front nut. I could remove or reinstall
in 15 minutes.

G'day,
I replaced the Aqua Magic in Double Trouble when I was back in the USA in
February. Unfortunately I tossed it out.
I bought two of these one for each of my GMC's:
http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/rv-toilets-tanks/aqua-magic-style.htm
83-1598 THETFORD AQUA MAGIC STYLE PLUS
CHINA BOWL, HI PROFILE, BONE COLOR
Regularly $318.00
On Sale for Only $229.00
Manufacturer #: 34430
Notice that if you spend over $200 shipping is FREE!
To install this toilet you will have to rotate the sealing flange in floor.

Denny,
The top does not come off. KenH. sent you the link for the manual. In the GMC group, we have the manuals for most of the commonly used items, even some of those not factory installed.
While you can still put water to it, make sure it is the vacuum breaker (Top - very rare failure) and not the flush water valve (bottom - very common failure due to poor winterizing). If it only leaks when flushing, it could be the vacuum breaker, but, if it leaks all the time, it is the flush water valve.
The manual shows how to get the pot loose. If you put a flashlight on the left side floor, it will end up lighting where you need to see to do the socket/U-joint-long extension trick to get that back nut off.
To put the pot back down, there is a trick and and a secret.
To get it on the two closet bolts, put you right hand underneath to guide you to the front hole and look through that pop-open hole to target the back bolt through its hole.
Now that it is on the bolts, time for the secret. Denny (the designer that wrote that procedure - I think was part spider monkey) was the only person I have ever known that could put that back nut on that way without pain. What I do, is to jamb the nut into the socket (a deep well works best) with a piece of paper - toilet paper seems to always be handy. Then I carefully let the nut/socket/U-joint/extension through that pop-open hole so set the nut on the bolt and run it one several threads. Then shake the socket loose so the paper falls out. Now let the socket back down onto the nut and snug it up. If you try to shake the socket loose when the nut is run down, sometimes the socket comes loose from the U-joint.....
I will have to repeat this operation in the very near future.
Good Luck,
Matt

The china bowl unit as mentioned by Rob was an upgrade that really brought the GMC out of the 70s and made it feel current. I had the REcirc toilet 'option' so I didn't like that concept, and replaced it. Done.

You must have the same toilet I have. I had to remove mine last year, front
bolt is a piece of cake, back left is a bear.
I was able to do it with the socket and extensions, put some stuffing into the
socket so the nut stays right at the end, then some tape so it holds the nut in
the socked, I used a dental mirror with a long handle for some help, took awhile
but I got it.
NOTE: DO NOT over-tighten the bolts, it will warb the bowl and the seal will
not hold water in the bowl. I had over tightened mine, then found out I wasn't
supposed to do that, had to go back and loosen both nuts.
It's all doable, but your right.....not fun !

Your description is fine but it is missing some detail.
You should open the flush mechanism and put an object such as a spray can into the opening to hold the valve open. This makes it fairly easy to get a socket extension and u-joint onto the rear nut.
I wrote this up years ago and I believe that Billy Massey posted it on his site.
Here it is in the gmcmhphotos.com site.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6104-thetford-toilit-removal-instructions.html
The pictures and description together might help.

I am going to see if i can get you know who to put this in, joking,
this is the answer to everything on the gmc with a recycler pump and filter, this is the answer.
recycle your urine to wash you behind, this is conservation at it's best with less carbon foot print too!
plus the body heat will keep the temp just right for cold mornings.

The best conservation is not to use it - a recycling bidet would assure it’s used only when ABSOLUTELY necessary!
