My steering column has always had a little more looseness in it than I
liked. With the installation of my new Manny Tranny, the sloppy shift
linkage (it doesn't have good detents) has become problematic. So,
today I first tore down the Olds column Kosier gave me for seminars
(to refresh my memory & check parts condition); then I tore down the
column in the GMC.
It seems a shame to reassemble it all with the worn out bearings,
which were sorry to begin with. Problem is, they're not as easy to
find as I'd expected in view of the tens of millions of cars built
with the same column. The chair stores don't carry them and we no
longer have a GM dealer. I've found a Corvette parts specialist who
seems to have them -- at outrageous prices.
So the question for the day is: Has anyone found a good source for
our steering column bearings?

Have you tried SKF and/or WW Grainger?
These are ball bearing assemblies, or rollers, or what? Send a model with Stick over the 4th and maybe we can find someplace in the city who either stocks them or has ever seen them before.

Johnny,
No, these are not standard bearings; they're really only a plastic
cage holding BB's. In fact the housing forms the outer race and the
inner race is a separate piece -- where the shaft doesn't act as the
inner race.
Peter's reference was a good one, but while I was still fresh at 7:30
this morning, I managed to assemble a complete set of good bearings
from the two columns. If I can just keep all the balls in place as I
reassemble it, I'll be good to go to my son's for Father's Day. And
on to Huntsville to the Space Museum with his two sons on Monday.

Ken, if you can get a number or some accurate measurements on the bearings you can call MOtion Industries in Houston Texas. They specialize in all bearings. phone# 713) 675-1853

Thanks for the information; I'll save it for possible future
reference. For now, I've got the situation under control. I was able
to reuse one bearing from each of the columns and now have the GMC
almost reassembled -- all the hard stuff's done.

Those photos appear to show a bearing with a metal outer race; those
in the columns I've disassembled do not have the outer race -- just a
plastic cage to keep the balls together. That cage is usually broken
so that when you disassemble the column you wind up with the 14 balls
from one of them all over the room.
