Dan, you just gotta define "Shade Tree Mechanic" properly.
Ya sit in the shade of the tree, and tell the mechanic what the symptoms
are.
Then he fixes it, and you all have a beer.

Many moons ago, I did have a mechanic sorta like that. No shade tree,
but if you were in the shop about 4 PM you got a beer. Just tell him the
symptoms, though, don't make a guess about the solution, or he would
replace your guess, and not look any further.

Shade Tree Mechanic - Works usually in his front yard in the shade of a very large tree.  It's probably his gramps' house originally.  He uses a large limb to anchor a chain fall, he can lift the engine out of anything normal.  Some are surprisingly proficient.
