reference to lower steering shaft, yoke assembly as noted in parts book page 16.6 diagram 16.020.
one the end of mine where it attaches to what i would consider a small universal joint, book calls a journal kit. mine has what looks like a plug on that end,, plug may appear the size of a quarter. i assume made that way. Near the center of my plug there is a small whole(hole is maybe the size of 40 lb fishing line. i am not sure if rust hole, or if this hole is meant to be there. my journal pieces feel real tight, so between inspection and budget i do not wish to replaced complete assembly. i wonder if i should try epoxy on outside, or maybe insert something maybe like fitted piece of cork or ? then fill with greese and let greese push cork or rubber disk out as to seal this ?
input appreciated

Brian,

Good on yah for providing the Parts Book reference!

For clarification; please confirm that you are "speaking" about the four KEY
2 - JOURNAL KIT - shaft (SOA) and each one has a hole in the caps?

If you are I believe the vent hole is there to allow grease to escape when
the universal joint is serviced with grease through the zerk in the cross.

Regards,
Rob M.

based on my part book, item number 3 is where i see the small hole, i dont believe it would allow grease from universal joint to seep out, but the grease that is behind the blue splined piece . also related, part number 4 that is the washer for the blue splined piece, where can i get one of them?

Brian,

OK, the hole is in the bottom of KEY 3 - YOKE ASSY not KEY 2 - JOURNAL KIT.

In the line drawing in the parts book you can see a grease zerk sticking up
out of the yoke. The hole in the bottom of the yoke allows old grease to
escape when you grease it.

When I had the YOKE assembly out of Double Trouble I disassembled it and
cleaned it. I found KEY 4 to be a cork seal. I have a spare yoke assembly
and I think it is rubber.

AFAIK you can't buy this seal separately. However, you could make one out of
cork sheet, I'm guessing that it is 1/8 to 3/16" thick.

Regards,
Rob M.

Where the arrow is pointing?
There is a breather hole there. Don't seal it up.

I had to drill a hole in that plug and drift out the blue shaft. It was
very stuck.

i never got the nerve to pull steering box,
but i did find a boot that a jeep guy used on his vechicle when he raised it. it fit tight at the top , a little loose at bottom, but i can live with that, clean all , add boot, repack with good grease and reinstall.
i have not driven yet since night falling and approaching my bed time but once installed and torgued to proper amount i see that when i grab yoke now and try and rotate with engine off the yoke moves maybe 5 degrees, much better than the 15 or so before i did anything too it. steering wheel appears to still have a littel play, but much less, and with engine running and turning slightly it appears to try to return to center.
what i learned,
since i never got comfortable with screwing up the steering box, i left it alone, i figured no better was better than making it worse.
i also learned that torn boot had to go and grease had to be better for bearings than water and mud was.
thanks for all input received on this matter, next is putting it on ramps and making brake light go out and stay that way
