Judy and I attended the big Ham-Com hamfest in
Plano, TX over the weekend. One neat item that
I found (and bought) was a "Flag-Pole Buddy."
This is a pair of clamps and brackets to attach
to your ladder that will hold a mast to hold up
an antenna. It is designed for flag-poles, and
is available for two sizes of poles; either 2"
or 1.25" (I think) diameter. The 2" size is just
a bit larger than the commonly available mast
sections from military surplus.
The O.E. GMC ladder rails are a bit small, but
the instructions for the mounts tell you to add
layers of duct tape inside the mounting clamp
to gain a tight fit. Worked out just great!
These sections have an effective length of 44"
and with the bottom at just about 36" above
ground when mounted on our ladder, six sections
will provide 25' elevation for your antenna.
Many sources are available for telescoping flag-
poles with a 2" o.d. bottom section and MFJ sells
telescoping masts that are 1.25" o.d. if you are
interested.
