Dang it. I hit the start button before I got my finger off the prime button. Onan started right up then died. Will turn over but no start. 8 years, first time it has failed me.

Dan,
I have no experience with that particular problem, but it sounds like a fuse issue to me. Could be the fuse in your prime circuit or the one on the control board. At least that's where I would look first.

Dan,
I usually start by jumping 5 and 9 at the ocntrol board. If the pump runs -- clicking rapidly and never slowing down -- I am out of gas. Jumping 5 and 9 is what the prime button does -- but from that location you cannot hear the pump run.

Dan,
I always hold the prime button while cranking. I don’t know why I do it this way, maybe Tom Hampton told me to, I really don’t know. In any case it’s never been a problem for me.
You say no fuel coming out of the pump to the carb - is the fuel pump working? If so, then you have 12 volts, so no fuse problem. If not then diagnose the voltage.
How old are the fuel lines going to the Onan? Perhaps a test from a gas-can could eliminate the possibility of a bad fuel pump. Hook line from pump inlet to gas-can. If she runs then I would suspect a bad line or is there a fuel filter in there somewhere?
Good luck!

And, we all know I struggle to be just a shade tree mechanic. I suspect I blew something by not getting my finger off the prime button before hitting START.

The only way I can start my Onan is to hold the prime button. After it
starts, I release the prime button and she continues to run just fine.

I agree with Emery. For a fuse to function as a fuse it needs to be faily close to rated limit at times, so that it is the weak link and something else does not act as a fuse. Considering that fuse could have been built at Littlefuse just up the street from me here in 1972 for a 73 coach, and has been to the moon and back, I think it deserves to blow. So Dan, now that it runs did you still want or need my 4 extra isolators? I'm glad you didn't replace them first and then have it fail and then you blame the isolators. Ha.

Standard rule of thumb is fuse at twice the nominal current draw of the circuit. That's large enough to withstand turn-on surges, but small enough to open before wires get hot enough to melt - assuming the wire guage has been propelrly selected for the load. For motor starts, a SloBlow <tm> fuse is indicated.
