unrelated, then to steering,
finished my ramps, 2 long ones for back and 2 short ones for the front, i have not used but i am confident they will raise coach approx 8 inches, 22 2x6x8 treated and 5 lbs of screws. 11.5 inches wide, longs ones are close to 8 feet long, short ones are a little longer than 4 feet.
if you seek pics , then send me email and i will forward pics from work phone
back to steering,
i removed my lower shaft assembly, the boot was holding more water than grease, time for new boot
i did notice when i tried to turn assembly before removal, coach not running that assembly could easily rotate maybe 3/4 inches, which as seen looking at steering wheel maybe 2 inches or so. is this normal?
that was with me grabbing joint assembly by hand.
the boot kit, i know the big one covers the joint as seen in parts book page 16-6 item number 8. the second boot in kit, what is it meant to cover?
are these normal over the counter parts? i know jim has but i assume including shipping i might save a few dollars getting local. I removed this with wheels straight but my steering wheel is off approx 30 degrees or so, am i asking for trouble if i straighten steering wheel up before i attach?
and of course, any additional input related to this is appreciated. thansk to all

Answers to only 2 of your questions.
Play. Sounds a bit more than acceptable. Was it running? You have to see if the play is before the box, in the box, or after the box OR some of each. Is the clamp tight where the intermediate shaft meets the box input? With the box on centre, you should see no delay in movement from input to output (on the Pitman arm side) No Visible delay at all. The play after the box will be the sum of the slop in any and all the parts. To test that you need 2 guys and one in the coach truning the wheel from 11 to 1 O'Clock back and once per second is good, 11 to 1 over and over. With in park, blocked and P brake on, someone lays on their back and starts at the pitman arm and works along each joint ching for visual and by hand feel for any play in each joint. I think RoB M wrote this up and posted step by step what to check off. 9 coaches out of 10 there will be some play in the drag link and the relay arm.
Wheel positon. Answer NO, the wheel only goes on one correct way though it can be made wrong at each joint. The CL of the wheel is to match the scribe mark on the steering column shaft at the 12 position. Otherwise the turnsignals will not cancel properly. If your wheel is not straight, it could be wrong at any of the splines , the coupler could be put together wrong, off by a spline or 2 at the box (even though the flat should allow the bolt to go in only one way it can be of a bit) or the tie rods ends are set wrong. Toe could be right or wrong but box not on centre. This puts the box off center and not on the high point which then explains all that 2 inches of slop.

John,
Thanks for the plug, HOWEVER, I was informed of some errors in my original
version and I revised it completely.
The revised copy is not on the ESGMC yet; I have to re-number the steps as
Byron pointed out that the way I wrote the revision was not as clear as the
original procedure.

Rob M.
