Hello,

Has anyone fitted an LP gas modification to their gen?.
I think you can get kits that also retain the petroleum running option.

Just wondering if anyone has done this and how did it go ???
Would be a nice option, for so many reasons.

Sorry i am posting so much stuff lately.I am rebuilding and need to get so many things worked out.

Saw this nice Yamaha tach/hour meter for a genset. I believe you wrap a wire around the spark plug and thats how it gets pulses. Seems good price if you have a use for one. I guess you could use for timing and stuff ??

I converted ours about two years ago. Starts instantly. Best of all, Ruth doesn't get into bed and say, "I am loosing brain cells, here," if we have run the Onan. No gasoline smells for my girl.

I got a kit from a nice fellow who does conversions. Found him on the Internet.

Hello George,
So you have converted your Gen to run on L.P Gas cool.
Can you tell us a bit about it. Do you have a regulator fitted etc. Do you have any pictures??. Do you have Carbon Monoxide issues, with that kind of system?.

cheers and beers

Here are some pictures of the first kit I received. The venturi piece was too large, even though itnwas for our Onan. It was replaced at no cost.

http://www.pggp.com/Onan/

This kit runs off the vapor side of the GMC tank as all the appliances do. My pickup runs on liquid. This means we dont have freeze up at the regulator. I did not do dual fuel, but suppose I could with the carb piece provided.

Kit: http://www.propanecarbs.com/small_engines.html

Call and talk to the fellow. Nice guy and very helpful. You can mention me and the GMC as he may remember the kit size that was correct. George Beckman, and he can look up the transaction.

So a hose runs from the tank to the back of the rear battery compartment. A simple tee is made after the regular tank valve. Ther is a regulator there. I opted to put in an electronic cutoff valve before the regulator. From the regulator is a hose that goes to the carb. I just added the venturi to the existing carb., before the air cleaner. This hose has to be routed so it can swing like the old gas line did. I removed the electric fuel pump and capped the hose near the tank. I got juice from the fuel pump ( fuzzy on this as I have slept since then) to run the valve to turn on the fuel. Figured the gas pump and valve served the same purpose. I will go look and see where I got the juice for the shutoff.

I made no adjustment.. It ran great out of the box. After a couple of years, the engine ran rough. I looked and the adjustment on the regulator was loose. I am wondering if they are shipped with the lock nut tight. I turned it back to where the lock nut seated and gave it a little tighten. Runs great again. Seems to start easily at altitude.

No fumes other than it smells like propane exhaust rather than gas exhaust. They run indoor forklifts with propane so I think it is all around better i n that respect.

I will snap a cpupl more pictures, but my Onan is not ready to be put on car show display. I keep it wiped off and oil in it. I have never painted or steam cleaned it.

Hello,
I don't know the costs involved, but i read somewhere that in terms of energy content this applies.

If neat gas is 100% then LP Gas is 74%.

Perhaps that would enable you to make some sort of calculation?.

cheers and beers

a better question is

how much maintenance is differed by using propane
- no carbon (propane eats carbon - engine stays clean
- no fuel line rot
- no alcohol gas
- no gas tank crud to filter
- no oil pollution
- no electric pumps and shut offs

when I was a kid ;>), we installed generators in the mountains of Orgn.
the propane conversions were the lowest maint,(always clean inside).
diesel was next , and the gas ones were always a problem.

I have converted several Onan powered welding machines to propane so they
could be operated indoors. The kits I used for the conversions were made by
Garretson. Consisted of fittings that are installed into the existing carb
if it is dual fuel, or a simple carburetor without a float bowl if it is
just LP Gas. The LP carb has an adjustable main jet that you can adjust to
get the best emissions possible using a sniffer in the exhaust. The
regulator has a primer button that is manually depressed for a couple of
seconds while cranking on cold startup. There is a solenoid actuated primer
that is used in remote start applications like our GMCs. When the engines
are warmed up and under load, the CO emissions as well as the UHC is
undetectable on the sniffer that I used. CO2 is very slight. Before
converting to LP, I used to do oil changes on the welders every 90 days or
so, and the oil was very dark. After conversion to LP, at a year, the oil
was still clean. As I recall, the welding machines were 250 Amp stick
machines, and AC/DC, as well as a portable generator that was 120/240 Volt
Frequency stabilized. They would hold steady rpm at maximum welding loads
as well as generator loads. I would say that they used more LP gas than
gasoline by about 20%. I used to decarbonize the engine cylinder heads
every 250 hours or so, and with gasoline they always had carbon deposits.
When running on LP, I quit decarbonizing them because they just do not make
carbon except when the engine starts using oil. Those engines are rated for
at least 2500 hours of service life between overhauls. Very durable
equipment. If I remember correctly, the welding machines were made by the
Miller Electric Co. I think a huge plus in a GMC would be that when the
coach sets for long periods, the fuel does not gum up the carbs like
gasoline/alcohol blends that we are currently using.

Jim,

When I was doing my homework about converting / adding LPG to engines I read
that while the oil does stay nice and clean it still builds up acids which
will eat the bearings. That seemed to make sense to me but I have no direct
knowledge that it's true.

As far as gas gumming up the carb in GMC's that sit for a long period of
time you could install a switch in the power to the electric fuel pump,
switch it off and then run the Onan till it quit? Or pinch off the fuel pump
inlet line with a clamp and do the same thing?

Regards,
Rob M.

Or just unplug the pump.

The connector is on the top of the genset. It only "needs" to be done before putting it in storage for a few months or more.
