For owners who have installed rear vision cameras:

1. Do you recommend the brand/model you bought?

2. If so, advise:

a. Brand/model
b. Display size
c. Wireless - or hard wired
d. Source (or I can search)
e. Estimated current price (or I can search)
f. Anything else I should have asked but didn't...

'Most appreciate your guidance. Online reviews of several
products I have considered seem to be inconsistent. As in
the Packard commercial-of-old, "Ask the man - and today,
also the woman - who owns one". "Shorthand" answers using my
text above welcome...

Fred, I have had the wireless Pep Boys $79 backup camera for the last 4 years and it works great. Small color screen but I'm not watching movies on it. Does just what I want it to and the camera can be powered by the backup light wiring or a hot wire with an off/on switch.

Jim,

Thanks much for your quick response. 'Hadn't considered the
Pep Boys product. With your four years experience with it,
'sounds like it has done what you wanted it to do.

Fred,I have two externally mounted Cameras on rear, one pointed toward towd ,one pointed down the road .
I have a flip down Moniter overhead .
When I looked at the moniter while driving, it takes a few secounds to refocus on the road ahead.
I installed a 15" Television on my dash as close to the instrument panel as I could get it.
Now all I have to do is rotate my head a little to the right to view the road behind an can return my focus to the front view of the road much faster.
The overhead monitor contro control ,lets me select either camera.
Be sure and get reverse view cameras ,not ordinary security cameras.

Fred,

I'm not replying in the format you requested. This is just anecdotal.

B/W systems are history just like tube type.

The big boys tend to go with Voyager (made by the same corporation that
makes Jensen car audio) or Sony. Both will have cameras that tilt for
bumper or down-the-road view in the monitor. Monitor sizes tend to start
at 7-inch color now days however smaller is available. Expect to pay
higher prices and be wired; no wireless here

I don't recommend smaller than 5 inches since we aren't under 40 anymore.

Having the mic on the rear, which is standard in the higher price range
and like the big-box units have, is helpful when someone is trying to
direct you and they speak better English than sign language.

Good cameras have LEDs around the lenses for night vision. That being
said, you'll get what you pay for.

If you just want a single vision camera that doesn't compensate for
day/night/direct sun then you'll pay around $100.

In my mind, the Voyager digital wireless system would be a good choice.
Good camera. Portability. Decent screen. Second camera can be added. Good
range for wireless system. Just a tad more expensive that a system from
4ucam.com

The 8907AV from 4ucam.com comes with a 7-inch monitor and an IR camera for
low light. It is priced at $199.

Costco sells the same thing that you can find from Amazon merchants, the
Rear View Safety model. Their price is $200. In fact, you'll get a better
description on the Costco site than you will at Amazon. In fact, check out
http://www.rearviewsafety.com/products.html for a whole slew of listings.
The system with side cameras is $400 and you'll not find it discounted
online. Everyone has it for the same price but RV Bus Parts will give you
$10 if you're the first (or the fifteenth) caller today.

Byron,

'Many excellent points! I most appreciate your response -
and the time you put into developing it.

'Recommend you consider offering to do a seminar on this
technology at GMCMI/Iowa or a later convention. IIRC, we've
never had one on this topic.

Fred, If you are in the mood, I purchased a new 7" GPS at Campers World (yes, I know they are expensive store), and it has a A/V input for a matching rear view wireless camera. I received the camera as a present.
Anyhow, the 7" screen really helps, and I like the integration of two systems into one screen.
Remember, if the system is wireless, it runs on "free" frequencies that there is no control over. People have reported backing their GMC, using the rear view camera, but the display was showing the output from another GMC. Makes for interesting times. All the wireless systems run on the same frequency band and interfere with each other.
Wired beats that problem, but then you have to run the wire.
I had the inexpensive Pep Boys system, but I found that the display was too small to read at any distance. And, the camera is fragile. I had a crack in the plastic lens and it leaked water.
I attached the camera to the rear license plate, using an old license plate as material to cut for a mount. I ran the power and ground wires up under the GMC License plate mount, for a near invisible installation. Drilled a hole in the fiberglass and pulled the wire inside to get input from the backup light.

Tom,

Thanks much for that input. 'Had thought about the
convenience of a combined display for GPS and the rear
vision camera but was unaware that such a GPS is available.
I will definitely check it out. I am currently using a
near-obsolete TomTom with a 3.5" display so I can
"rationalize" a replacement.

I agree with your observations on hard-wired vs. wireless
cameras.

If you and Marilyn are coming to the GMCMI/Iowa convention,
I would like to take a look at your installation. We are
flying out soon for our usual summer escape to Alaska from
the Texas heat. I, then, won't do anything on this project
until after the Iowa convention.

I have a system that I also received as a gift that I've not yet
installed. It puts the display on the rear-view mirror, which is a
pellical mirror that fits over the existing mirror. I've used that
sort of a system in a rented Ford, and it works pretty well--my eyes
are aimed at that mirror anyway.

My plan to solve the camera fragility issue is to borrow a Hardie
Johnson trick and mount the camera INSIDE the coach. From high on the
backside of my closet looking down through the window, I can see
anything behind the coach except perhaps a dog licking the back
bumper. It will greatly ease the task of running the wire, too.

The next step is to put a proper backup light on the coach.
