After working on it the entire three day weekend, and the last three evenings, after work, I finally finished up the installation of my new Gary Rockwell intake manifold. I have worried over this for several months and continued to worry as I was doing the work. I think my hair is a little grayer by now.
I used Dick Patterson's gaskets with 3-M weather strip/gasket adhesive and Permatex "Right Stuff" in place of the end seals. I had several fitment issues with minor accessories, but since my engine is stock and has never had any machine work done to it, I did not experience any problems with the manifold to head interface. After filing it with coolant, making a few minor adjustments, and tying up a few loose ends, I turned on the ignition, let my electric pump prime the carburetor, gave the throttle a few pumps, and it fired up on the first crank. It ran smoother than ever and held a steady 16" of vacuum at idle (this is at an elevation of 2,600 ft).
I let it run up to operating temperature, and checked for leaks. There were none that I could detect. I hooked up my timing light and checked the timing. It was spot on, besides, I have an MSD dash timing control for adjustment to compensate for altitude and load.
Pics, with captions, are on the photo site:

I know I'm not completely out of the woods yet, as I haven't even driven it around the block, much less on a trip. I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

Congrats, glad to hear a success story!
There's something to be said about a stock engine that's never had machine work done to it.

When I had to redo my Eldelbrock intake their tech support told me the biggset and best trick on a manifold install is let the sealer on the ends sit for a day or more before even turning over motor and have had no issues at all.

What were your vacuum readings with the OEM setup Carl?

Steve, lets have an "intake" party this winter at Carl's. This will be the third time to try and seal mine. This will be my first time trying Dick Paterson gaskets. I have them here just waiting, after I poured a qt in the engine at end of my 200 mile ride to Effingham. I really appreciate Carl, Chris, George, Rob, and all of the others that have shared information with me, along with Dick Paterson. I bet it does not leak after this install.

Steve, My hourly rate will have to be high enough that even YOU couldn't afford me. That's how much I DON'T want to do this again!
The vacuum reading before was about 15". It seems to have gone up one point. Don't know why. Maybe I fixed a leak somewhere else in the system.

Dan,
I vote for having the 'intake party' at Steve's. It's closer to Duncan than Tucson (marginally) and Steve has much more know-how about measuring and machining intake manifolds than any of us. I'll come down and help.

Yeah, If I have to do it a third time, I'l be joining y'all. Mine doesn't seem to leak anymore, but it took a few trips to manifest the problem. This time I let it sit for 36 Hrs before I cranked her up.
It runs pretty good now that all the wires are right!
I also put RTV on both parts, block and intake, in hopes that it would all meet in the middle.
If this doesn't do it, I don't know what will. What do the hot rodders do? Do we go back to the turkey tray?

Dan,
Did you calibrate your dipstick after the last engine installation? It seems like a lot of oil to suck through the intake for a flat lander.

A little follow up on the Manifold installation:
I took the coach for a 30 - 35 mile shake down yesterday morning. It ran great and the vacuum readings seemed to be good (hard to tell on a short freeway drive across town, with ups and downs of overpasses/underpasses). The 180 degree t-stat made a big difference in the temp gauge reading, but the fan clutch engaged a lot. I guess it's time to try baffles at the sides of the radiator.
The cruise control would not engage and when I got home, I found out why. I had inadvertently disconnected one of the vacuum lines at the transducer. I was also disappointed to see fresh oil at the back of the engine. Evidently, I didn't get the manifold down evenly and created a void in the RTV on the rear "china wall". I think it will be a relatively easy fix though. I plan to remove the distributor, wash out the area thoroughly with brake cleaner, and inject some more "Right Stuff" into the joint between the manifold and the rear wall. Fortunately, the only leak I could detect is that one, in the rear, where it is most easily accessible.
Hopefully this is the only issue.

Carl,
Clean up the back of the manifold and engine. Connect a vacuum cleaner to the oil fill tube and block (tape over) the PCV connections on both valve covers. Turn on the vacuum cleaner and use silicone. Smear it on the area where the leak is. The vacuum will draw in the silicone to the seam while it sets up.
Good luck.

Ken, what you doing week 24th? Come down for a visit and lets work on my intake.
Thinking a little shaving on mine may very well be in order. This is the same engine that popped after 6,000 miles. No telling how much shaving has been done to it.
