Two thoughts on this subject:
1. Consider getting a double-DIN size radio. Although they are about twice as big as the stock radio (4 inches high by 7 wide) I have seen them installed in a GMC dash. You just have to cut the right size opening for it. In fact, the cheaper the radio, the fewer the features it has, and the bigger the buttons will be. I like this JVC on the Crutchfield site...the power button is a great big thing on the top left corner: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KWHD720/JVC-KW-HDR720.html?tp=5684.
2. It's not just the newer radios that have cryptic controls. When I bought the DreamLiner, I inherited an AM/FM/8-track/CB Combo unit (try saying that with a straight face) with lots of buttons, and a few knobs that aren't labeled at all. I can't decide whether to send it to the landfill or the Smithsonian.

I understand.? Unfortunately, that's the situation in auto radios these days.? My Dual and Pioneer look similar superficially, but none of the buttons/knobs are in the same location and most don't have the identical function(s).? Plus, when they shift to CD play mode, the functions are again different.? Great way to bust your a$$, particularly when the GMC requires a lean forward to even reach.
