Has anybody installed a 3rd brake light? I have the interior of the coach stripped and can easily add such a light. Any suggestions as to type, wiring etc.? What about a rear mounted camera as well, its all wide open so anything goes.

I think it's from an Escallade.

Hello,
What do you guys use to control the 3'rd brake light. I bought a black box, and it was total rubbish. Followed instructions, and it always lit when either or signal wires were hot.
Ummmm Always on brake light not much use .....

cheers and beers

One of my solar panels goes crossways above the rear glass and covering 3 of my running lights. I have an 11 led strip up there with a flashing unit on it, mounts to solar panel frame. It flashes 3 times when I hit my brakes. It is nice and bright. I wanted to warn folks that I had the reaction arm braking system. When that light flashes they can not miss it. I have something similar on my vdub but it is a string of leds across the top of the rear window, inside. It also flashes. My rear view camera, on the GMC, is mounted between the top of rear glass and the center rear running light. On my vdub, the rear view camera is on the top of the license plate. I have 7 brake lights on my vdub and 3 of them flash, all 3 are leds. Follow me for a light show when towing the vdub.

Look at the pictures in the album I linked. It shows a product that is
best searched by "stoplogic brake lamp module" in Google. That search
led me to this page:

http://www.commandelectronics.com/third-brake-lights.html

The prices seem a little high, but the module in question is $16 and
at the bottom of the page. There are others who sell these American
Technologies, Inc., products, so maybe you can find better prices.
Scott Nehoda sold them to GMC owners when I bought mine.

3rd brake light controller.
http://circuitsnstuff.com/ should do the trick. Probably several other controllers available. This was found with typical Google search. Small and simple. With interior out, just about install it anywhere. You might consider a super bright LED 3rd Brake light. 1 watt units would be nice, 3 watt much brighter. Just need to control the current level to the LEDs. If you buy a commercial unit, it should contain a control circuit, and you don't have to design or build one. I wonder if Dan has one available. You could assemble one for about $40, including the controller. Radio Shack has a LED current controller kit for $20. Individual 1 watt red LEDs are about $3.50, need 3. Then Red plastic container for the LEDs ($10) and weather protection. I bought a red side marker light assembly for this part of the project.
Wireless camera would be very easy also. Just need to cut a hole in the body for the lens to poke out. Remember weather sealing.
I always thought that a steerable camera would be neat.

$40 makes the $46 that the outfit I linked charges for the LED unit I
used plus the controller sound reasonable after all.

I recently installed LED lights inside the bottom corners of the rear
window. Connected to running light, turn signal and Brake lite. Was a
simple task and
what a difference it makes in becoming visible. I'll take a couple pics
and email them to you.

May I suggest::

Interior is open right ??

Run one 16 gauge wire from dash to your 3rd Brake light at rear and ground the high mount brake light. Pretty easy Right? Tap the wire to the cold side wire of the brake light switch. (Don't do it too close to the switch, Give it some room to hide under the dash) To find the cold side of the switch using a test light:: It will only light when the brake is depressed. (Hence your high mount light will illuminate whenever you step on the brake)

This wire at the switch is the brake light wire. It goes to the signal light switch which blocks brake light power from going to the rear signal that is flashing. The Modules that you buy try to emulate this but as you can see, some work and some not so. They are also expensive and unnecessary.

There is also a extra blue 14 wire in the stock wiring harness to the rear.(From beside driver to left rear signal light connector) I use that one for a "ignition on" signal to a blocking relay for trailer battery charging and a Vacuum pump power supply relay for the US GEAR Towed Vehicle Brake system. However you could use this wire for your brake light as well. Extend the front to the brake light switch and extend the back side to your high mount brake light. (Ground the Light)

May I also suggest Installing in a few more wires in a bundle from front to back at the same time:: Leave lots of room at each end so you can hook them up to whatever.

1- 10 gauge (Blue) ( I used this one for my electric trailer brake controller (less loss than the extra blue in the factory wiring harness)

1- 16 or 14 gauge (Other colour) ( I use this one for the US GEAR Towed vehicle brake control signal line).

1- 10 or 8 Gage (Red) ( I use this from front right corner of coach all the way around to the generator compartment fuse protected.) (Relay power source from vehicle battery)(I also use this one for a relay package that runs the HD trailer lighting) While I have pictures, they have not been uploaded. Modern day HD Trailer packages use relays which I have emulated)

1- 14 Gauge 4 in one multi- colour wire (used for trailers but you can use them for other purposes such as switched lighting from dash, or control the generator from the dash at a later date. Get it at Princess Auto
http://www.princessauto.com/pal/product/4211355/Wire/14-Gauge-PVC-Insulated-Trailer-Wire-/-FT

4 or more- (16 Gauge or more) for speaker wires (depending on your stereo -or sound system- choices and needs)

1- Coax cable or what ever you need for the video component ( This will be for your rear view camera so you will need to establish your needs for that. The power going back with the other wires can be used for the camera.)

Best Regards

One other thing: Rolling Eyes

The brake light switch on the pedal is a combination switch:

Brake Lights and Cruise control disengage. Check for sure, but I belive the wire you need is white.

Hello,
Was reading this article with interest. Thank you John.H for the brake switch to 3'rd brake light tip. I did not want to buy another black box for the brake light, and find it was rubbish also.... Also nice to know that there is an unused wire running to the back of the coach. I would add here tho , make sure a P.O has not used this for some other purpose, before attempting to use it.

cheers and beers
