Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement stereo unit that will
fit in the dash where the stock unit is on a 1976?

Most any contemporary unit will fit but you have to make a minor modification to the dash hole by cutting off the old mounting tabs. Then the standard DIN mounting frame will fit in nicely. The DIN frame will come with your new unit. A dremel tool will do the job nicely.

Most DIN 1 sized radios fit very nicely. Bend or cut the tabs for the old radio off. Install the radio sleeve mount in the bigger hole. Anchor the sleeve to the firewall, for both bounce control and electrical ground. You will have to trim the plastic dash opening to match the new radio. Make sure the speakers have separate grounds for each speaker. Do not use a classic ground for the speakers. They will die. I ran two new wires for all the speakers.
Do not use the GMC Grey wire from the GMC radio harness for ground, it is a false friend. I ran new ground to the firewall, not relying on the harness for this function. I also ran an independent hot lead to the house battery. This way you can turn on the radio without the key, just remember to turn it off. Of course, you will only drain the house battery, leaving the engine battery to start the GMC.
Replacement DIN 1 radios are everywhere and price range goes from $50 and up

In my SUV, the OEM radio has a big knob, closest to the driver, that is volume and also push-on, push-off. When I went shopping for a new radio for the GMC, I didn't research completely, and ended up getting one like most of the new ones available, that have a small button just above the big knob in order to turn it on. In retrospect that was a mistake. Focusing and aiming at that little button to turn on the radio when you're parked is not a problem, but the extra couple of seconds it takes when you're driving is really obnoxious. Learn from my mistake.

G'day,

JimB installed a newfangled radio / DVD player in Double Trouble it sounds
great but it takes someone well under the age of 21 to understand the way it
works.

Does anyone know of at AM /FM radio with a DVD player that DOESN'T have all
the bells and whistles?

Regards,
Rob

Rob,
Not only are "simple" car radio's scarce to non existent but dealers tell me manufacturers are now putting in only the most basic AM circuitry. You want AM in the hinterland, tough.

Any one DIN size unit - which is most of them - will fit.  Simply bend the knob hole tabs on each side of the existing opening till the DIN mount slides tightly between them.  The hieght of the opening is already correct.  I got a Dual on sale for $49 from O'Rielly's that works well, and a Pioneer for HD in the coach (The Dual went in the toad).

No.  Even the cheeeep Dual I got for the toad has beaucoup buttons, lights, and doo - dahs and a removable front panel.  Invest twenty minutes with the maunal.  You want to find Off-on, vol, scan tune, manual tune, button set, and what currently passes for tone control.  The rest are superfluous.

I put one in that has a remote. The remote controls most of the functions. I also ran a hot line to the house battery with a switch in it. If I want the radio on, I just flip the switch. The remote lets me control the iPod as well. Smile

Radios that have DVD play capability are scarce. With the iPOD and USB connections, DVD capability has disappeared. I had a JVC that had DVD playback capability, including DVD formatted movies in my old coach, but I believe that JVC discontinued that radio. It cost about $200, at Best Buy.
Since you are buying in the current market, look for a radio that has the "HD" capability installed, do not settle for one that has an adapter, they tend to disappear from the market, or become obsolete fast. HD capable radios are at Wal-Mart, so they are not difficult or expensive to find.

Johnny,

I have done that but there's two problems:

1) the way the thing operates is TOTALLY non intuitive!
2) we only use the GMC 3 / 4 months a year
3) there's 8 month interval and I forget how to run the damn thing!

Oops, that's 3!

I understand.  Unfortunately, that's the situation in auto radios these days.  My Dual and Pioneer look similar superficially, but none of the buttons/knobs are in the same location and most don't have the identical function(s).  Plus, when they shift to CD play mode, the functions are again different.  Great way to bust your a$$, particularly when the GMC requires a lean forward to even reach.

Even better they have two aux inputs and a USB port (in the back). You can plug an iPod or other music player in the front and can put an extension USB cable to have a USB jack almost anywhere. (For thumb drives full of music.) With CD or DVD drive they have no real moving parts so they SHOULD be reliable.

Simple, reliable and fit in the dash without modifications and have a stock look. The only thing you could ask for is for is for them to be cheap....

From looking at the videos, they have multiple functions on each knob. You press the knob to toggle through the functions, starting with volume on one knob, tuning with the other. This works ok unless you are not the steady with the knob. I had a radio/CD that was very touchy and would switch "functions" with the slightest push on the knob... like when you are adjusting the volume and go over an expansion joint in the highway. I learned to steady my hand with a couple of fingers on the dash while turning the knob with my finger and thumb. (Steve now has it... it went with the Sidekick he bought.)

I have heard of units with similar functions being sold at places like Walmart in the $40 to $50 range. But being a single DIN size, they would require some modification to the dash.

I have no idea of the sound quality of the Retrosound or how well they are made... with the $160 price tag, one would think they would be a "little" better than the $50 Walmart unit.

Nice find Rob!

Yep, and I'm sure glad it came with the manual. Every time I want to use it or reconnect the battery I have to check the manual. Mike - I was sure glad you gave me that old time R&R CD. At least with a CD all you have to do is shove it in and it starts.

If you want a simple DIN1 radio look for basic radios in Fords from the 90's, Escorts and such.

I'd be sure to get a head unit with Bluetooth capabilities.

We just installed a Parrot DIN unit which we got from Crutchfield. With it paired to my phone, I can listen to stations around the world, Pandora, and the voice from my phone's navigation system. It has the added benefit of being half as deep as old cd players, so it's easier to work with.

The other advantage of Bluetooth is that it somewhat future-proofs the technology. Most new phones going forward will have the capability, so you may get more features as you upgrade your phone.

remotes are great for the GMC, so much easier.

As far as useability? Sheesh what a bunch of junk.

I am a computer programmer, I write this stuff, and I can barely figure out my Kenwood.

Hidden menus, menus that change when you are in different modes.
horrible naming.
Not to mention auto translated documentation that was minimal to star with.

It does sound very good when you get it all set up though
