I have a set of Patterson gaskets with the blank off plates going into my coach. One thing I noticed is that the plates have some curling at the edges from the die. Has anyone sanded these smooth, or should I just install them and hope the manifold flattens them?
Manifold R&R is a total pain in the ass, and I don't want to do it a THIRD time due to a problem with sealing. My Mr Gasket set was fine at the heads, The stupid rubber valley wall seal at the rear of the block is what leaked due to splitting. I will be using RTV this time.

Dan,
Chris and I have been emailing back and fourth about this.
Chris,
Like I said in my email, my plates were pretty flat. If yours have a substantial curl in the edges, I would hit them with a file and try to flatten them to within reason. I think the clamping force of the manifold on them will flatten them out pretty well. I had to trim the notch in the gasket on one side for the plate to fit correctly. Either the plate was a little bit too big, or the hole too small. Like you said, this job is a PITA! I sincerely hope I get it right the first time. I've been working on this all weekend and just now got the distributor back in. Oh well, break's over, back to work!

I just did a 455 with Dick's gaskets/block-offs and they went in fine. I did have the curl on the plate edge so I took it off with a file "just in case". No other problems with his set whatsoever!

Sorry guys, no photos, camera was at the office. I installed this without removing the distributor. It is pretty easy, you just gotta hold the thing in hover mode just right before landing.
Glued the gaskets to the heads with the hi temp copper RTV. These line up perfectly. Worth the price, but the shipping from JimK was a bit steep. these could have probably been shipped USPS for $4. I think they estimate the shipping based on price.
Used a large bead of RTV on the edges of the valley and put some on the manifold too, so they meet and seal.
Dick also sent me a PM about the plates. I did hit them with a file, just enough to take the edge off and put that edge at the top, as they stick up above the manofold, you can see them.
RTV is curing now, Tomorrow night I will finish, and drive the coach to work on Wednesday morning. Hope all will be OK, but it will take a long road trip to see if my oil leak is taken care of. It didn't happen until I was about 30-40 miles into a long cruise.

Chris, I doubt that you will spring an oil leak now. I have done a couple of high rise edlebrochs on my Mustang same way. I also have done it, on the Ford, without removing the distributor, when the Ford mechanic told me I couldn't. Ford dist. is on front. Now, Should I have to do mine again I may look at doing what you did by not removing the distributor. When I put Dick's distributor in, I took pics of the old one so I could see where the rotor was and I put new one in same way. All information from folks that have done this is good to have out here. My thinking is Dick Paterson's gaskets are the way to go. I know he has been paying attention to this topic for some time and has worked to get them right, before letting Jim market them. Thanks for the report.
