At the registry site putting in my recently acquired 1973 GMC II, two questions came up that I am sure someone here on the board can help with -

1. If there were 2059 coaches built in 1973, why do I have number 2081?

2. As a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, I am really curious what the "RPI College People Mover" is or was?

hmmm....

Sir in the manual under identification shows serial #s starting with 100 a 3 digit # as 001 is a single digit # and would not fill the required 6 didgets.

All years ended up with coach serial numbers higher than the production count, for 1973 the highest #s were ~31xx. I have contacted a number of GMC employees who might know the answer, but have had little success. We know the numbers were issued in batches and we can only assume all numbers issued were not used.

I don't remember if I had posted pictures of it or not, where did you find a reference? I am presently at a GMC MH rally in MA so if I don't answer your question contact me after next Sunday when I get back home. The RPI coach was an early Transmode that Ralph Merkle was quite proud of, I was never sure why. I have pictures of it and can post them if needed.

The first 20 production 1973 coaches were used for testing etc and were destroyed. V100021 and higher were sold to the public.

I had always assumed the first coach of every year would start with V100001. I saw TZE168V100000 at Boerne, TX when the GMC Intl. rally was there, seems to me Dave G has at least one other listed.

After my searches for GMC information I have found only one thing for certain, nothing is for certain.
