This is not confirmed yet, but sounds like it is the way things will be going for those of us who have Unlimited data plans from Verizon. Hold on to you wallets. I am a 7 year user and this makes me very very unhappy.

"Verizon mentioned in an investor conference that it will be eliminating unlimited data plans, even for those it grandfathered in. From the article: 'Speaking at the J.P Morgan Technology Media and Telecom conference today, Verizon Communications CFO Fran Shammo told investors that the company's 3G unlimited data plans that customers were allowed to hang onto last year when Verizon switched to a tiered offering will soon go away entirely. Instead, the company will migrate its existing and new 4G LTE customers to a new "data share plan." The company has yet to announce the details of this new plan, but it has said previously that the data share plan will be introduced in midsummer. The plan will allow people on the same family plan to share buckets of data each month, much like they share voice minutes and text messaging. It will also allow individuals to share data across different 4G LTE devices. '"

Did they say why they were doing this? Is there some technical
reason? Is it a financial reason? Is their network getting overloaded
and they just don't want to add capabilities cause it will cost money?
Just wondering as if this happens then AT&T won't be far behind.
Anything we can do about it?

Here is an option to going with Verizon.

I use a Millenicom MiFi wireless box.

They offer a couple of plans, all without a contract.

Here is a link to a users group.

Anyone have experience with this outfit?

Too late Gary. I have had an unlimited data plan w. ATT for 4+ years and last year when they introduced the 4 iPhone along came their tiered pricing system. They said we would be grandfathered in and keep our unlimited status. Last month I started receiving notices and warning of additional billing for excessive usage. Customer service says that after 2g of usage they are throttling you down till your next billing period but no extra charges. Throttled Down! It was like dial up during a recent out of town trip. Had me looking for wifi spots just for directions. I am not happy.

My contract is up and I am desiring a 4 to replace my 3GS.
I was told at a corporate ATT store to call account retention and tell them I am quitting and see what they offer me. Will keep you posted.

Sprint is offering unlimited everything for $99. ATT @$150. without messaging. Add $25 for that.

Emery, you just got a 4 and stayed w. ATT. Fill us in. Are you using it a a personal hot spot. I need to tether too.

I'm hoping that's just for the 4G users...

Virgin Atlantic 3G MiFi spot, $50 per month unlimited data. No contract, pay only for 30 day period you use it. Can also pay for smaller daily and weekly use. Runs on Sprint's 3G network. MiFi device is about $130. Radio Shack and sometimes Wal-Mart, has the device. Wal-Mart has "introduced" a competing product, but appears to be slower, and a monthly contract price. Wal-Mart employees were very unfamiliar with both the product and the pricing. At minimun wage, what can you expect? I bought this for travel usage.
Do not know about usability in an area without Sprint backbone.
Yes, AT&T, Verison want more money. Nature of the beast.
An interesting development, look into Republic Wireless. Their phone runs wifi first, when wifi not available, runs on Sprint backbone. $20 a month. Still in Beta, add your name to the list for the extended beta test. Not much to loose.

Hey Pete;

What's the number for Account Retention? For almost 2 weeks I've
been uploading videos of our Moab dune buggy trips to YouTube (1 alone
was 1Gb) using MyWi hotspot. I started using my wife's iPhone 3GS at
first until it got to 1.5Gb and then I got the usage message from AT&T
(her's only has the 2Gb data plan). I then did the jailbreak on my
iPhone 3GS and setup the MyWi hotspot thing (I have the unlimited data
plan on mine). Will be interesting if I get the usage message. If you
know the Account Retention number I'll give them a call. I still have
about a year on my plan and will drop them in a second if they break
the rules on me. Thanks.

BTW, when the phone companies change the usage rules, that will allow you to get out of the contract without penalties. Of course, then what?

Then I, for one, go back to doing without.
Just like I did for many years.

Yes, I have been using it as a hotspot in Colorado when I go up as I have not signed up for any internet service there yet.
I haven't had any problems with mail or Internet signons. However, on one trip there I download a large update to my Operating System and within a week I got an email from AT&T that I was using too much. There was also a threat that I would be switched on the unlimited plan if I continued to use so much.

So, I have not been downloading movies or other large items through the iphone.

They haven't bothered me for the last two months.

We bought a pair of 4s iPhones at end of January.
We signed up for the $25/month DataPro 2Gb plan.

My use is running a bit under 1 Gb so far, but I
save eMail messages with attachments to read on
my computer later.

My wife is using very little so far, less than 50
Mb/month. I need to reduce her plan to the $15/month
200 Mb plan then monitor her usage and go back to
2 Gb plan if need be.

We don't text much so don't have a plan for that.
Just eat the one or two $.20 per message in a month
if we do.

Our daughter has an iPhone 3 with updated operating
system so we can text to/from her at no cost.

The DataPro 4Gb program runs $45 per month, with
$10 for each additional 1 Gb (or portion thereof).
