Would it be wise to install a combiner off the Power Converter so that it can charge both the house and starting batteries when it is being powered by genset or shore power, or will the batteries drift towards death together because of the combiner when not being charged? I have no facility to leave the coach plugged in at all times.

Randy,

What a combiner is SUPPOSED to do is interconnect both banks ONLY when charging voltage is present.

I have a good power supply (converter) but the negative
cable from it to the coach ground is open somewhere. I
have a Yandina combiner up front and keep the house
battery charged (along with engine battery) by hooking
a separate charger to the house battery side of that
combiner.

It's working fine to keep both batteries up until such
time as I can repair the missing negative connection
from the power supply to the coach common ground.

What is the consensus about installing the Combiner across the Isolator or replacing the Isolator with a Combiner?

As Matt said "What a combiner is SUPPOSED to do is interconnect both banks ONLY when charging voltage is present" I just want to add "on either side" to the end of the sentence so we all understand it works symetricaly as far as signal to combine. Once it's combined it's just a few feet long piece of dumb 12GA (IIRC) wire between the 2 batteries. When charge voltage is absent on either side, the relay falls open. No parasitic drain.

John,

My Yandina combiner doesn't work like that I tie the two red leads to the solenoid from the dash battery switch with one combiner lead going to the engine battery side and the other one to the house battery side. That way it will charge both batteries when plugged into 120v or the Onan running and when the engine is running also. The combiner will cut off the two when either battery is discharged to a specific voltage. In other words it won't let a house power drain down or the engine related drain cause the other one to discharge lower than 12 Volts. I threw the isolator away years ago.
