...Here's what GMCMI Members get for their $30 a year membership fee!
...1) Yearly update of the GMC Motorhome International Parts Interchange Index.
<Rant>
Last year , after BDub's request for an on-line parts capability for the parts list that was on his site.. I put together an on-line prog to automate it. After some discussion with him regarding the GMCMI parts list, I 'adjusted' it so that they could use it also and have normal users and GMCMI users able to have their respective parts list on-line. I also mentioned it at Shawnee to GMCMI representatives but have heard nothing more from any on making it available to all. They're reluctance IMHO was due to the GMCMI Parts interchange list to be a inducement to get people to join their group, but not to make it available to the rest of the GMC community..Some other GMC'ers have also assisted in updated the database of parts, and I have allowed them to be able to use it by hosting it on my home server. It needs some more adjustments to make it have more features/etc.. but its ready for use. Are we going to do these efforts for the GMC community or the GMC groups???
</Rant>
Just my point of view...

I am not specifically interested in the parts thing but it sounds to me as though you might be a computer guy and I think that technology is where it has to be to solve the problems that everyone is talking about in these threads.
My opinion is that people should join GMC clubs because the clubs help support the GMC and the annual fees are spent doing things that are good for all GMC owners, not just members of clubs. I am a member of GMCMI and I value the parts interchange book but I constantly see people give out info from it to non-members on the gmcnet. As GMCers, we are not going to ask if they are members or not, we just help.
I think that part of the answer to not being able to attend rallies and the nature of the presenters and their presentations is to possibly stream the seminars on the web with the ability to ask/answer questions from remote viewers - webinars. These sessions could be recorded for playback later from the club's web site. It would take some equipment - probably not really expensive and some bandwidth at the site of the rally but that can probably be handled with money. The big problem is technical people willing to work on stuff like this - anyone?

The point is not the individual bits of information. Granted all of those
are in the public domain. The valuable feature of the GMCMI Parts
Interchange List is that it consolidates all of the available information
in one location and is maintained in as nearly current a condition as
members' contributions allow. The effort that goes into maintaining that
is what makes it unique and valuable. Nowhere else can you find a single,
easy to transport, always usable source like the GMCMI PIL. As so many
have said, it's worth more than the GMCMI dues. Anyone who's
philosophically opposed to it remaining an exclusive benefit of membership
should, as a similar matter of principle, refuse to accept any information
that came from it. :-)
I don't think anyone, including GMCMI officers, has ever objected to the
attempts others have made to offer on-line parts interchanges -- I've
contributed to them myself -- but the effort involved to develop and
maintain such a list is enormous. I doubt that GMCMI would attempt it
"from scratch" without the baseline established during Ralph Luby's reign.
I'm sure Billy would appreciate more help from all of us in providing more
corrections and additions to continue and improve its usefulness.

Ken, I concur. The reality of the situation is that someone that cannot
afford the 35 bucks to join GMCMI is not going to be a GMC person. We've
seen lots of folks who buy a beat up GMC just to have a motorhome or in fact
just a place to live. I can understand that. Here on the west coast we've
seen countless folks who have posted to the net who are looking for handouts
and free parts. I'd rather give my money to the RED CROSS. There have been
lots of folks who have donated time and parts to to those who don't give a
rat's **s about promoting the coach. Their boohoo stories seem to strike a
chord with some of us. Our hobby is no different than the custom car hobby.
You have to "pay to play".
Thanks

CB,
...but who cares, we have 'our' list for us...
I'm confused, are you saying it's OK for you to distribute the information?

It not only puts it on-line but also includes links to the photosite/etc

It's not the $35..

NO, I would not be distributing anything...
The application would be on-line with GMCMI controlling who can get into it, what goes in it/etc..(ie: logins & pwd, controlled by GMCMI people)
I am just making it available for use. Non-GMCMI people would NOT be able to access the information, the only information they could access is what BDUB had on his site and whatever anybody else adds to it..
In fact the GMCMI people would be able to see ALL of the information in addition due the GMCMI info..
But nobody cares if there are checks & balances in it.. They only assume that it would make the list available to anyone and I would be giving it to anyone...
So much for general assumptions...
now , why are people reluctant to offer new things...
