HAMILTON, OH WORK RALLY - JUNE 2 - SAVE THE DATE
A GMC work rally will be held on June 2nd in Hamilton, OH just north of Cincinnati. The hosts will once again be the Millers at their property that offers space for parking and working.
It is a "no membership, no dues, no badges" event - just lots of GMC work and talk and meeting other owners and wannabees. All are welcome, bring your projects and problems and someone will probably have answers and help. Try to keep the projects to a size that can be accomplished in the limited time available and know that others may be busy with their own work as well as assisting you with yours.
The Miller compound is southwest of the intersection of Routes 4 and 747. Easy access is from I-75 at exit 29 (Route 63 - Monroe) then west to route 4 and south to route 747. Early arrival on Friday and late departure on Sunday are okay, dry camping only with very limited plug-ins. The exact address is:
5129 Princeton Glendale Rd. (Rt.747)
Hamilton, Ohio 45011
About 1000 Feet South of Rt. 4
Bring parts for swapping and selling, also anything needed for your projects. Some special tools and assistance might be available if requested in advance. We will have access to a floor pit on Saturday for the underside jobs.
There will be a "Dutch" restaurant dinner on Friday evening for those arriving early. Saturday will feature a pot-luck noon cookout with burgers, bratwurst and hot dogs provided plus whatever else you care to bring. Please contact me at: rburkitt@cinci.rr.com with any questions and to indicate your attendance and projects.

Ken -
You were missed last year, it will be great if you can make it. Should I plan on the Palm Beach being the bunkhouse again, are you bringing your coach or do you want to stay at the Casa de Labrador?
I am going to try to drop the tanks in the PB while we have the pit available, add metal lines atop the tanks and repair the fuel gauge wiring so the gauge works properly. It goes to full deflection on one tank so there must be a broken wire somewhere.

Hi Bob,
I would like also to drop the tanks on my PB. I have all the parts, senders, orings, fill hose and the between the tanks and so forth. Just need to get the lines.
Do you think it would be possible to do mine as well? If I recall the pit is really long and plenty of room. What do you think?

IF I buy a new property and install a pit... what should I use for dimensions? Depth, width, and the minimum usable length. Sorry it won't be 3 GMCs long. I guess a sump pit or drain feeding one would be a must too. IF I do this I will put in a 14-50 in the garage and at least one 14-50 outside the building and a dump station as well. Fingers crossed..

John,
I can't over-emphasize how glad I am that I did not build a conventional
pit instead of my post-supported ramps. The advantages are so obvious to
me now that I can't believe I ever considered anything else:
1. No claustrophobia because 2 sides are wide open -- the 3rd is almost so.
2. No heavier-than-air gas collection hazard because of 1., preceding.
3. No steps to climb in & out -- just roll out on my wheeled stool. If it
was stand-up height, just walk out.
4. No problem of lifting heavy components in and out -- just roll them out
on a jack, wheeled platform, or with an engine hoist.
5. A fixed pit must be narrow enough for the wheel tread of the narrowest
planned vehicle. My ramps can be adjusted down to the S-10 or up to the
rear of the GMC.
I could go on, but those few points should be considered by anyone planning
a service facility. Of course, the terrain is a major consideration: My
sloping terrain made it easiest to build a sitting-height facility and I
first planned an open-ended pit of that height. I don't know how I arrived
at the decision to eliminate the concrete block walls in favor of posts and
runners, but I'm REALLY glad I did.
It was sheer good luck that I found a heavy 14" I-beam CHEAP to use for the
ramps. It would have been nice if it had been longer -- being able to
accept all of a 26' instead of only 7' (+ overhang beyond wheels) would be
nice, but is rarely missed. If I'd found longer ramps, I'd probably have
added intermediate support posts rather than depending on single posts --
calculating the ability of the available ramps to support the expected load
over the planned span is essential.
Don't just blindly build a long hole in the ground.\
Here's a photo of my rack:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/new-service-rack-amp-drivetrain/p10327.html
I thought I'd posted more and later pictures, but I don't find them. The
angle iron between the two posts has since been modified -- it was a major
PITA having to always duck under it. I cut the center section out and
moved it to the outside, with its outer end supported by a smaller post.
It now supports removable 2x12 runners as a catwalk to the coach's entry
door. On the other side, I've also added a catwalk and the concrete block
barely visible have been replaced with a set of wooden steps and a landing
beside the entry to my shop.

Man, I sure wish I could dive into it more! Our yard man comment to HER
today, "Miss 'Laine, when he gits that new engine in there, y'all gon' be
gone ALL the time!" Sure hope he's got it right. I'd dearly love to leave
here about the 1st of July and join the "Across Canada Rally" in August.
We'd probably have to peel off for GMCMI Amana, and we'll have to be back
here to host the Dixielanders' October rally in HER home town, but that
would all be GREAT! Just hope my 95 yo mother's health will permit it.

To All Yall
I have worked under Kens Drive over workstand and it definitly is the way to go. If i get around to building one i will build it the same way. So much room underneath just gotta remember not to stand all the way up to fast from your rollaround seat.

John,
I have a 44ft by 48ft garage with three large doors. The pit is in the middle stall. It is is 48 inches wide, but if I were to do it over I would make it 42 inches wide. I am not sure of the depth, but I will measure it tomorrow. I made a 6 inch drop from the front to rear of the pit with a 12 inch square and 3 inch drop such that I could pump the pit dry if it ever leak water. Never has in the last 12 years. That is what I remember but I will check the measurements tomorrow.

Here is one rated to 14,000lbs and 1/4 the price. Doesn't have a length in the description, might be a tad short.

Would be nice, but I don't have a place to put it.

Richard,
That lift is WAAAAY overkill!
BendPak makes a lift that is good to 14,000 pounds which is long enough for the GMC and wide enough for Rostra mirrors:
