Hi;
I am well into the planning of the August 6th to the End of September on
the Across Canada Trip.
We plan to stay with Tom Struthers at his place on the Lake of the Woods
near Kenora, Ont.
our next major stop is at Dick Patersons near Barrie, Ont. What I need
help with is figuring the
places of Interest between these 2 and what kind of distances can we expect
to cover over this stretch
of road.
I had figured to stop in Thunder Bay to see the Terry Fox Memorial, then
somewhere between Marathon and Wawa next.
then somewhere between Sault St. Marie and Sudbury or Perry Sound. Then to
Barrie.

After Visiting with Dick Patterson we head to Stratford, Ont. where Bruce
Hislop has said to help.

Question: while in this area I have thought of a run into Detroit to see
the Ford Museum along with
the GMC museum. If so I would appreciate some guidance with this.
From there back onto Ontario and Niagara Falls.

Best Regards
And Happy Mothers Day

Dwayne,
When we fly out of Detroit (airport is not far from Ford Museum) we bank on about 4 hours from Stratford crossing at Sarnia/Port Huron.

Going to Niagara Falls from there is shortest through Ontario crossing at Windsor.

BUT!!! don't forget if you take your coach over to the USA you kiss ALL your food goodbye!!

It might be better to see if there is a bus tour from Windsor over to the Museums... or even rent a couple of cars... and leave your coaches in Canada.

The Museums are a must see when you are in the area!

Hi Bruce;

Any idea on how much time we should figure for Ford's Museum. A day trip
from Canada or an overnight?

Regards
Dwayne

Dwayne,
You can easily spend an entire day at the Ford Museum and not see everything. Its been about 10 years since I went there.

Chrysler also has a museum.

This has chanced somewhat. Outside groups can now tour the GM Heritage Center. Need minium of 30 people though. From their site:

"Group Tours
Group tours are available to groups, clubs, or staffs, and require a 30-person minimum. A fee of $10 per person is charged for tours scheduled Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A fee of $20 per person is charged for tours scheduled after hours or on Saturdays. Sunday and Holiday tours will be quoted by the GM Heritage Center event coordinator. Guests should allocate about 1.5 hours for their tour."

Being only an hour away from the border, we cross quite a few times, latest about a month ago.

They ask for "meat, fruits and vegetables". Then most times they come in the coach and check the fridge and cupboards.

We usually leave from home and cross the border with no food, then buy it on the US side. When we've been in mid trip and crossed with food we try to not have any of the above since we have had it taken previously. Last summer on the way back from the Maritimes we crossed into Maine with a partial lime I had for my Coronas. The two border guards argued as to whether I could keep it or not, but in the end they took it. So it may depend on the Border Guard you happen to get.

We had a discussion at the Heritage Cruiser's rally about what they will take. Some had cans of veggie and beef soup confiscated and others had their dog food taken as well.

The moral of the story is, don't take any food to the USA if you don't want to lose it!

We cross here at the Peace Arch Border crossing many times with the coach -
the only time they took something was
meat sausages. We never take fruit with seeds across.
Thanks for the tips.
What I really need to know is about the travel between Kenora Ont and
Barrie, Ont. I have to plan our travel along this stretch
and don't want to miss "Must Places to Stop and explore" - some advice on
the slower sections - recommended campsites.

Thank you.

Dwayne not quoted due to length of post.

Dwayne,

Doing the swing into the US for the museums could be very interesting.

The rules for what food stuffs can be brought in vary by the day and inspector as nearly as I can tell. Fresh meats and vegetables are almost always an issue.

This is a problem we have on a regular basis as we lived in a border community and we still have friends and family that frequently cross. The prohibited list changes often.

If you can prove it's country of origin is the US or Canada, the canned foods are usually OK.

I am going to be learning more about this in the next few days and will publish what I learn and contact information here and other places.

If you choose to bring the coach across the border, I can provide parking with power and water and access to a dump (with restrictions). It is somewhat noisy at times as we are under the approach to DTW. We are also 25min from HFGV.

The Henry Ford is really two different museums. There is the indoor museum (only 18 acres) and the Greenfield Village of famous buildings (and some reproductions). If you can take the time, it would be easy to kill a day at each. I suggest you go to www.thehenryford.org and look around a lot.

If you are really planning on Thunder Bay, you should go to "Old Fort William". If you enjoy seeing what live was like in the days of the Voyagers (late 1600s) it is a must.

G'day,

When Helen and I crossed the border to see the Canadian side of Niagara Falls Canadian Customs lady asked me:

Do you have any guns? NO

Yadda, yadda, yadda

Do you have any pistols? NO

Yadda, yadda, yadda

Do you have any rifles? NO

Yadda, yadda, yadda

Do you have a shotgun? NO

What do you use for defense - The Police

Guess they noticed the TEXAS license plates! No wait a minute on that trip Double Trouble was registered in New Jersey. Maybe they
figgered I was from Newark (along with the Sopranos.)

I don't remember being asked about food coming back across the border into the USA, however, I do remember them asking me how long I
was in Canada and I noted "X" hours to see Niagara Falls and have lunch.

Speaking of lunch I was surprised when I ordered a hamburger rare and was told it had to be well done. "THAT'S THE LAW!" A steak you
can have rare but burgers because they are chopped meat must be cooked well done. I had a steak sandwich instead. The restaurant was
just next to the falls, it felt like you could reach out and touch them.

The other thing that surprised me was there was a stone wall (with a hand / guard rail on top of it) which was around waist high.
You could walk up to it and hop on top of the stone wall and then fall over into the falls (accidently or on purpose). Guess the
Canadians figger that if you dumb enough to hop on top of the wall and fall in - DARWIN theory applies. If you want to off yourself
they're not going to get in your way!

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT CRITICISING any Canadian Government policies I am merely making an observation! Warped maybe; er PROBABLY! ;-)

Regards,
Rob M.

More and more chain restaurants in the USA are now
mandating "well done" which is just about equivalent
to burned cardboard as far as tasted and juiciness
are concerned.

I just leave without ordering when I encounter that.

Rob, within the last year someone did fall over the very wall at Niagara Falls that you are talking about. She was in Canada as a visitor from another country. Considering she was at least a young adult and was I believe in College, I was surprised she was unaware of gravity. Don't climb on/over the wall to pose for a picture !!!

Dwayne, you may want to check about the "sights" in Sudbury. There is a Museum and and a mine tour for tourists.

About the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. I was there a few years ago for "Railroad Days." I allowed 2 days for travel from Toronto visiting the Museum/Village and return home at the end of the second day. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS !!!!

If you want to do both in 1 day, if you are into looking at "stuff" I don't think 1 day is enough.

Dave,

That is sad!

Did they make any changes to the wall?

I agree the Henry Ford Museum is an AMAZING place. I figgered it would just be full of Ford's, however, it is much more than that!

Helen and I split up - She went to Greenfield Village.

If we were in the area again I would spend as much time as necessary to go through both places to look at ALL the STUFF!

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob, within the last year someone did fall over the very wall at Niagara Falls that you are talking about. She was in Canada as a
visitor from another country. Considering she was at least a young adult and was I believe in College, I was surprised she was
unaware of gravity. Don't climb on/over the wall to pose for a picture !!!

Dwayne, you may want to check about the "sights" in Sudbury. There is a Museum and and a mine tour for tourists.

About the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. I was there a few years ago for "Railroad Days." I allowed 2 days for travel
from Toronto visiting the Museum/Village and return home at the end of the second day. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS !!!!

If you want to do both in 1 day, if you are into looking at "stuff" I don't think 1 day is enough.

DAVE

Mike,

As a USAussie I feel it's OK for me to criticize the governments of those two countries.

I will COMMENT on other countries governments but be careful that whatever I "say" is carefully and diplomatically said. ;-)

Some people get REALLY upset when you criticize their country as an "outsider."

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob, I haven't been to Niagara Falls since the young lady fell over. However I may go for Walenda's tight rope walk across the falls. I have looked and leaned over that very wall being CAREFULL about keep most weight on the safe side of the wall.
