Still trying to find out how everything works in my coach.
My house battery was dead so I removed it. I plugged my electrical cord to an outlet in my garage. Nothing works, no interior lights no heater, ect. The buzz box is getting hot (measured 145 degrees).
I take it that there has to be a battery in place for the 110v source to work?

You should be able to get 12 volts from the buzz box is it's plugged into a 120v extension cord from the garage. You can check at the house fuse box if you have 12 volts there, then the circuits should work if the fuses are good. Indon't think you need the house battery for them to work.
If the buzz box is bad (not putting out 12 volts), then I would recommend changing it out for a more modern converter/charger.
Do you have the owner's manual for your coach? It should show the location of the fuse box is you're not sure of it's location.

Ok, I unplug the converter trip all the breakers. I have 120 at the
outlets, plug converter back in and checked the 7 fuses for house lights,
water pump, furnaces etc. No power across any fuse! Now I justification
(if I really needed any) to get a new converter.
Any suggestions on what brand or power rating?

Most people go with the PD9245. Anything bigger will charge the batteries somewhat faster but is generally not needed. As to the combiner, some people like them and others do not. I have one and it works well. The combiner will keep your engine battery charged when plugged in. I would check your isolator and if it is ok, I would not get the combiner yet. Anytime you change more than one part, it complicates troubleshooting if the system does not work.

Bruce, I have a PD 9245. It was the one Jim Bounds recommended. I paid a little more for it and bought it from him. It is plug-n-play Automatic three stage charging with a "Charge Wizard". Works great.

I bought the PD (forget the Amps right now) several
months back. Unfortunately it won't charge my house
battery bank. Ken Burton discovered at Shawnee that
my problem is that the negative is apparently not
connected to the coach chassis common point. I have
not yet had the time to follow up on Ken's good
suggestions to fix this. The PD converter has good
output though.
I added a combiner and am keeping both house and
engine batteries charged by a separate charger that
is hooked to the "house" point on the combiner.
One of these days!

Bruce,
You are going to like it. It was one of the first mods I made to my coach after the 'buzz box' cooked all the water out of my house batteries. Contrary to what Bob said, I have never heard any annoying fan noise. I sometimes leave the door to the electrical compartment open to aid in cooling, when I know it will be charging really hard (such as when dry camping and running the Onan for an hour or two in the late afternoon or evening). The fan on my cheap HF 750 watt inverter makes more noise under a high load than the PD9245 does.
I ran a #6 wire directly to the pos cable terminal in the back of the compartment and another #6 to the ground. I then ran another #6 from the pos terminal to the 12-V fuse block. My battery meter (a Trimetric 2025) shows a charge rate of 40+ amps going into the batteries when they are low. The rate drops as they charge up.

I have the 30A IOTA. Works for me. Variable speed fan cooling as needed. My buzz box is a boat anchor in the garage. Still good as the dumb tech allows it to be. Remember that when recharging batteries bigger is not better. Slower is better and more gentle. For me 30A is enough.

How did your install go. I am thinking this is something I need after reading this thread. I didn't know the buss box should be replaced if still working. Any tips would be appriciated.
