Les,
Thanks for that. It's the most complete dissertation on the problem I've
seen. Some of it I'd seen before exactly, and all of the topics have been
addressed in one way or another except for the TC stator: all of the
converter people I've talked to have claimed that if the TC was causing
forward thrust, it would fail almost immediately and be obvious. I'm
pretty well convinced that the TC I was running during both failures is
responsible. I'll take it back to the rebuilder soon and ask them to do a
teardown analysis -- with no accusations involved.
It's for sure I didn't cause the problem by lugging the engine -- I've
always believed in using the transmission, besides the fact that I didn't
really do any significant climbing before either failure -- aside from 70
on the interstate pushing the GMC box through the air. :-)
I'd REALLY like to find a definitive cause.

Ken, I wasn't targeting you specifically with the info as I figured you wore out your keyboard researching the topic. That said I'm happy you found the info of value.
I actually posted the link for the benefit of everyone as it is the most detailed info on the subject that I've seen as well.
Perhaps someone should capture the info and make it available as a future reference for us.

The debate over thrust bearing failure has been going on for years. If you go back into the GMCnet archives you can find discussions dating back to 2000.
Generally the engine rebuilders like to blame the torque converter. The transmission guys blame the engine rebuilders and the finish they put on the thrust surface.
I see that 12 years later nothing has changed in the finger pointing.
The site you reference shows bulletins from the Engine rebuilders association.
I can find you references on the internet from the transmission builders that say just the opposite.
