I usually pull a boat but this summer we are planning a trip to Maine without the boat and a car would be nice as we are staying in one spot. I ran the numbers on cost of rental verses lost gas mileage pulling a toad. Based on some previous posts, folks have said they lose 1 mpg with a light toad. Current best rates for sub-compact at Enterprise is just under $20 per day on a daily rate. At current rates, it appears that break even is around 500 miles round trip...

((500miles/10mpg)-(500miles/9mpg))*$3.79gal = $21.05

The most expensive enterprise rental is a minivan at $85/day... So the break even on a minivan is 2000 miles.

Don't forget to factor in another 50% (yes, 50) for their "fees" and
that's without insurance.

I think it has merit. If you rent from a non-airport location, you will save substantially on extra taxes.
Enterprise will usually allow you to cross into states that touch the state where the vehicle was rented.

Be sure to add in the 'extras' on the rental.  Which are mostly insurance.  Used to be, if you rented with an AmEx card, you rental was insured.  I'd check this in advance.  The daily bite can add up - biut not nearly to the bite if you manage to write off their rental.

Mike,

Try this link to Enterprise. I stayed at a Super 8 motel a couple of years
ago and got this deal. I copied the link and have been using it ever since
WITHOUT having a reservation or staying at a Super 8 motel!

http://tinyurl.com/4o2yoxd

http://www.enterprise.com/car_rental/deeplinkmap.do?bid=002&cust=WYNCPS8&cm_
mmc=Wyndam-_-Super8-_-WYNCPS8-_-Null

As far as the fees go I'll check my Enterprise receipts for car rental
during my recent trip to the USA as soon as they arrive in Australia. I mail
them back to myself so that if Aussie Customs goes through my bags looking
at what I brought back I can fib about what I paid for the stuff and not get
caught with the receipts!

It may not be necessary to accept liability insurance as your car policy may
cover you in a rental car. I have a Visa Card that covers collision, fire,
theft, etc if I use it for the deposit on the Enterprise car. There are some
nutty fees when you rent a car in Houston, I'll detail them when I get the
receipts.

By the way the GMCMI deal with Enterprise has expired.

Regards,
Rob M.

I do a lot of business with rent-a-car agencies. We drop and pick up passengers at their offices all the time.
Do not rent a car near an airport and you shall save %30.

I almost rented a car to go to the Casa from budget r-a-c. They would have given me unlimited mileage $28 a day at 28 miles per gallon - some little bug

car.

I got the flew and could not go. Manny offered me some ice cream free if i made it, but i could not get away. I really wanted to go and get a hotel

room, they had one open at the casa as well - but i caught the tourista from something.

Virtual toad idea. good idea.

enter prise is good they pick you up and drop you off free. Make sure they check every scratch before you take off. And park by rich people.

If you get keyed you may have to paint the whole car.

bottom of page are some bad stories of rent- a -car deals.

Mac,

I just logged into the HOG website and couldn't find anything relating to
rental car discounts.

Please point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Seems like they send me discount coupons for auto
rental places every year when I renew membership.

USAA insurance is another company that does that.

Companies that do that aren't all that rare.

Our H.O.G. memberships get us 14% off on ATT
cellphone!

Being retired military, or otherwise Federally connected, gets you 15% off
of any cell phone -- by Federal law, according to Verizon here.

Mac,

AHA, that explains it!

I don't renew the HOG membership as I bought a Life Membership back when
they first offered it which was in the early nineties. I am pretty sure it
cost me less than $200.

I logged into USAA and set up the exact same rental at Enterprise and here
are the results:

Motel 8 5% discount rate for a compact car:

Car and Rate Information: Economy Chevy Aveo or similar
33.16 USD (1 Day @ 33.16)
494.97 USD (3 Weeks @ 164.99)
29.70 USD (TEXAS REIMBURSEMENT FEE)
557.83 USD (Subtotal)
27.90 USD (HARRIS COUNTY STADIUM TAX)
55.79 USD (SALES TAX)
641.52 USD TOTAL CHARGES

USAA Discount

Car and Rate Information: Economy Chevy Aveo or similar
31.50 USD (1 Day @ 331.50)
470.22 USD (3 Weeks @ 156.74)
29.70 USD (TEXAS REIMBURSEMENT FEE)
531.42 USD (Subtotal)
26.58 USD (HARRIS COUNTY STADIUM TAX)
53.14 USD (SALES TAX)
611.14 USD TOTAL CHARGES

As you can see its $30.00 cheaper!

Thanks for the heads up!

Regards,
Rob M.

OOPS! I goofed on my H.O.G. discount with ATT.
It is 17% and it replaced my 15% discount that
I previously had as an FAA employee!

And since my wife is also a H.O.G. member
(rides her own Harley) she gets the discount
on HER "Family" iPhone, too. She had NO
discount previously.

For what it is worth, Enterprise has a weekend rate for under $15 per day
unlimited mileage, depending on the car you can get $9.99 (100 miles per
day). You have to have the car either a Saturday and/or a Sunday. When I
travel on business I try to rent a car on Thursday and return it Saturday
or Sunday. Or rent Saturday or Sunday and return on Tuesday, Great deal -
but it throws off all the calculations I have see in this thread.

My 2 cents - or more!

Tom,

Your idea is clever IF you only want the car for a week. If you rent one for
a longer period (I just spent two months in Humble working on Double
Trouble) it would be a PITA to have to return it once a week.

The monthly rate I got was $539 which; when divided by 30, works out to $18
per day.

Rob,

That was mainly directed at the long weekend or week long events. I
usually have the ability to schedule my install dates. I usually install
on Friday & Saturday, then use the car for leisure, return and get out of
Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep land - or New Jersey!

As we all know, you are the exception to all rules - and we also know that
it is all Dan's fault!

Hope you are well,

Tom

Where is Dan?
He must be home printing up some more money so he can come to Bean Station.
