I need some help, after a very complete chassis /running gear restoration our
GMC starts w/ a turn on the key.It is still on jack stands, it hits the
ground tomorrow
afternoon. My problem is with my new sen. booster I bought some time ago, I
believe
that the rod that came with it is to short (2 1/2"), The std. one with the
stock booster
is 3 3/4" long. I remember some time ago someone had this same issue. does
any
one know what the proper length of the rod should be. Now I know why to buy
from
the JIM"S. I bought it when I was a real Newbie, won't happen again.

Larry,

Are you talking about the rod that goes in between the booster and the
master cylinder or the rod that attaches the booster to the brake pedal
pivot?

If you're talking about the rod that attaches to the brake pedal pivot below
you will find a story you might find interesting IF your booster is made by
MBM and purchased through Carolina Classic Trucks (CCT)!

On 10/17/2010 I bought two boosters from them; one for John Sharpe and one
for me. Mine was for The Blue Streak here in Australia - I already had
installed one from JimB in Double Trouble and LOVED it. When they arrived we
noticed that they were made by MBM which is the same company that supplies
them to Lee Harrison (Idencorp) if I correctly recall info KenH provided.

When John went to install his he found that the yoke that attaches to the
brake pedal pivot up under the dash was too short. He removed it and found
that the measurement was 2 1/2" from the housing to the bottom of the hole
in the yoke. He contacted me and I measured mine and it was also 2 1/2"
John measured a couple of boosters he had there and found the measurement to
be 2 7/8" on one booster and 3 1/4" on another.

We then sent this information back to CCT and they told us that they had
sold over a hundred of these units and never had any problems before! They
instructed him to send the unit back to MBM for rework which he did. When it
was returned he installed it but he did mention he had some problems with
the installation. John, comments please.

I brought the one The Blue Streak back to the USA in February and was going
to have MBM rework it but decided just to return it instead. I didn't want
to wind up with a reworked unit that still wasn't right. I returned it and
called JimB and got another one from him. At the end of the day the one from
CCT cost $132 and the one from JimB cost $239.

I just received a credit from CCT for the returned booster of $132 but I
wound up eating the shipping from MBM and back to them again. That was
because "we have sold over 100 of these units and never had a problem."

At any rate MBM has discontinued making these units so you can't screw up
and order one from them.

Regards,
Rob M.

Larry, the rod is too short. Making the pedal so close to the floor that it not only restricts the full travel of the master cylinder but also makes adjusting the transmission kick-down switch and the brake light switch impossible. The booster has to be disassembled on order to change the rod.

Carolina Truck had me send mine back to MBM along with the old booster that had the correct length rod. They sent me a booster with a rod that was a little longer than it should have been but it was within the maximum side of the range that allowed me to re-adjust the switches so they would work. It took several weeks to get everything worked out.

After all the hassle I went through with being told that mine was different from all the other coaches and only one other person had ever had a problem & it coming back after being re-worked with a rod of a different length than the one I had sent as a pattern (original booster) , I am sorry I ever bought it in the first place.

G'day, For the record after reading their Cc'd copy of my message Carolina Classic Trucks sent me an email asking what they could do to make it right. I advised that as far as I was concerned all they owed me was the shipping charges for the bad booster from MBM to Houston and return. They sent me a Pay Pal payment today and AFAIC that's that. Based on this action I would do business with them again.
