filled up my water tank and found the plastic elbow behind the toilet is leaking, Have to use a mirror to see the fitting but have been unable to loosen the hose or even loosen the fitting. I
have the original toilet and was wondering if the top portion comes off so as I can get to the fitting in the back. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

The toilet comes off the base with only the two screws, so it probably is best to simply remove it to be able to really see what's going on. You might be able to remove the supply hose from the toilet where it attaches if you can't get to the lower fitting. A mirror might help you get a better look at that area as it is pretty tight back there.

If your going to take off the supply line is a good idea to change out the little rubber washer/gasket in the supply line connector. My were all broken down from years of use and for a few cents its a good time to change them.

Thanks George for that suggestion, It was a bit ackward but I was able to
get at the two screws that held down the toilet. Went to An RV store about
15 miles away and bought the plastic $15 dollar valve for $50 bucks (can
you say RV). He didn't have the connecting fitting but said I could go to
Ace and get it cheaper there. Went to Ace they did not have the right
fitting. Went to another RV place and was treated like a moron but was
able to get the parts I needed. Had to change out the 1/4" water line to
3/8" that only took an extra hour to install.
I had tried a second toilet but that one leaked around the valve as well
and installing the second toilet I had to cut the hold down bolts as they
wouldn't let the stool to set flat. Back in with the first stool and now
the hold down bolts are too short. Off to Ace for their longest toilet
bolts, still too short. Back to Ace and got two stove bolts 3" long,
finally got the stool in place. The back hold down bolt came out ok but to
try and get the nut back on I couldn't get my wrist to bend enough to
thread the nut on. Finally after a beer and a few choice words I was able
to get the nut started. Just to get the toilet to stop leaking it took me
7 1/2 hours. We were going to go dry camping at a reservoir about 90 miles
awaytoday but maybe we will get out tomorrow.

G'day,

I bought two Thetford Aqua Magic toilets from PPL while I was in Houston,
they cost me $218 each. That's a bargain for a ceramic bowl toilet!

Here's a link for those of you that might be interested; unfortunately the
price has gone up to $229.

I installed one in Double Trouble and I'm going to bring the second one back
as baggage when Helen and I return to Australia after our summer tour.

Regards,
Rob M.

Bruce,

There is no "original" toilet in a GMC. They came with one of three Thetford pots. In '76 the common choices were the Electramagic recycling and the Aquamagic clean water flush.

Right now, I am stuck remembering the trick for the recycle, but the Aqua has a plug in the bowl rim. If you pop it out, get a 7/19 deep wall socket, a universal and long (real long) extension, it is not all that tough to manage. Put a light on the floor beside the pot - plenty will reflect to where you need it - eye down through the hole and guide the socket on. To replace the nut, same - same, but put the nut in the socket and jam it in there with a piece of paper. Lower the socket/nut to the top of the stud and fiddle with it until it catches and runs down about a nut's worth of thread. Now give the extension a little shake and the piece of paper will fall out so you can run the nut down snug and still get the socket back out the hole.

I strongly suggest that you get the iron carriage bolts out of there at the frist opportunity (it can probably wait until fall), because, if they rust there you will have a problem. (You think you had a tough time this time?) If you get to a real plumbing supply, they should have the longer bronze screws for that. They will probably only have a kit of screws, nuts, rubber washers and caps, just buy the whole kit.

If I recall correctly - The valve kit (a valve and flange seal) has an MSRP of about 45$us, but can usually be had for less. You will need one every time you don't get the valve clear of water during winterizing. (It was a known issue at Thetford, but no workable correction was found.)

Have a good weekend.

Matt

Thanks Matt,
I was just tired of chasing around and just wanted to get the da*n toilet
installed so we could leave on our camping trip. I will replace the hold
down bolts latter in the fall.

Bruce, your story makes me chuckle. I went through the very same thing a couple of years ago while living in the GMC out in Az. Same story about the kit for 50 bux and being treated like a moron at the only rv store for a 100 miles in any direction. Had to stand on my head to get everything in place. Next winter, similar problem. Took out the original toilet, kept the 50 dollar part and sent it to George in Al. or Ga. and picked up a new, to me, porcelan toilet from Steve Ferguson. Love it. Took a little getting used to but works great.
Hope you get gone on your dry camping trip. Those are the best kind.
Thanks for the smiles,
Dan
