Though the most serious PO was meticulous about maintenance, someone did the coach an serious injustice. At some time, probably to get the black tank down, the two 1-1/2 at the rear corner were bastardized. It seems they managed to reuse one coupling, but destroyed the other. What they did leave didn't matter because they used steel pipe to screw into the black tank fittings. The remains of the original coupling are probably not usable. Of course I get to work on most of this stuff on my back under the jacked up coach.

So, both of the black tank female threaded opening need to be reconstructed. I may have a local guy that can weld them in, but he does not have the 1-1/2 NPTF in poly to weld in there and I have had no success in locating a supplier. (yes, I sent JimK an e-mail.)

Has anybody else had to re-work this area?
If it was successful, can you tell me what you used?

Matt

Matt, I've seen these grommets used...

Matt,

My black tank had similar issues -- the steel pipe nipples were original fittings, and when they rusted they split the inlet collars.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/73-painted-desert-230/p31250-black-tank-inlets-73.html

There was also the beginning of a split in the tank top between the two inlets -- A local tank repair/building company did this for me...

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/73-painted-desert-230/p31395-0053.html

My tank was polyethylene.

If you can just remove the collars there are rv tank rubber fittings that can be inserted into the holes and they accept a slip pipe.

I also replaced the fittings above the inlet with rubber fittings from Lowes....

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/73-painted-desert-230/p36326-gmc-plumbing-drain-010.html

I have some additional photos of the above fittings -- but have not loaded them to the photo site -- if you need them.

Hope this helps.

Dennis

Dennis,

Thank You,

Yours was the posting I was remembering but could not find.
If the iron nipples were OE, then all of us with '73 will have this problem sooner or later.

I have no objection to using rubber connectors, and I will look at the grommets that Wally pointed out. I guess I really need to get the old bushings out of the tank top so I know what I have to fill.

Wally,

Everything is a help at this point. I had never seen or known of those grommets. I'm going to look them up and get better detail and hope I can use them with jumping through flaming hoops.

Matt,
I have the black tank that I removed from our 26' Glenbrook. I was going to make a patio table out of it but Sandy thinks we might have a problem with flies. If you could use the female fittings let me know.

Matt,

I addded a couple of pictures...
this is with the inlet collars removed and shows the rubber grommets that are often used on RV tanks.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/73-painted-desert-230/p43929-00716.html

But I was concerned about these cracks between the inlets and went with welding.

Jim,

That is a great offer.
Mine were already damaged and I finished them off trying to get them out and save as much of the tank as possible. I'm not sure if they could be removed intact without destroying the tank top.

It would make a great table. If you close it up the flies loose interest. I know this first hand from having worked in Thetford's engineering lab years ago.

Thanks again,

Matt

Dennis,

I have found several sources for those grommets, what I am having a hard time getting is dimensional data for them.

My tank has cracks too, but not between the holes. These both go way from the holes. I'm taking pictures.

Matt,

This one for 1 1/2 inch pipe states it requires a 2 1/4 inch hole and is 1 3/4 inch long.
