Hi
I just bought a Honda generator to replace the Troll (Onan) but it is in Dallas and I am up north looking for someone to crate this up for me Jim Walker was kind enough to look at at and store the generator for me but I need to have it packaged and shipped. I am waiting on a couple of quotes from packaging services in Dallas.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

John,
If Don is willing to bring it to Amana it would probably be a good idea for
you to come down and get it.
You could remove your Onan and stick the Honda in there and Canadian Customs
would be none the wiser!
You should have seen all the paperwork Ken Burton and I had to organize to
get the Olds engine from Ray McHugh back into the USA, I hate to think what
you'll have to go through to get the Honda into Canada! Plus what it will
cost you in shipping, duty, and taxes!
I just went to MapQuest and found that it's 1077 miles from Montreal to the
Amana Colonies and using 9 mpg for your GMC it will cost $450 for gas.
C'mon to the Convention!

How or who are you going to ship it? Do you have the specs for what they
need? As Emery says, a lot of stuff can be shipped just bolted on a pallet.
Or I could build a box around it to protect it. Or maybe I could bring it
to Amaana Colonies in Sept :)

I would love to go to the convention but still working and the better half works for McGill Unveristy so vacations are June July and August. Possibly a week in the winter so no conventions for me until I retire or win the lottery.

Rob,
John & I work at the same shop. We both also bring lots of stuff into Canada from the US. It is much easier than going from Canada to the US. All we normally require is a bill of sale.
The parts I brought back from Marcus Only required a bill of sale and the contact info of the seller. The customs agent barely blinked and passed me through with no fees to pay.

Les,
Because I was importing an engine complicated matters greatly.
At one time Ray was going to bring the engine, trans, and final drive to the
USA for me. Below you will find an email discussing what I was told was
required.

I apologize that it has taken me SO LONG to get back to you, however, since
I received your messages back in June noting that you would be willing to
bring the engine, transmission, and final drive down to the USA I have been
working on finding out what is required to get it across the border. Believe
you me it has been a struggle to find and talk to the right people! On
Friday I FINALLY got to talk to the US Customs Office at the Bluewater
Bridge border crossing as I believe that is where you will cross the border.
I wanted to speak to someone there so that you could speak to the same
person I did. I spoke to Supervisor Stoffel. I told him the following:
The parts were removed from a fire damaged GMC Motorhome manufactured in
Pontiac, Michigan. I told him I didn't know the year but it was between
1973-1977.
The engine was a Oldsmobile 455 made in Lansing, Michigan
The transmission was an Oldsmobile TH-425 made in Lansing, Michigan
The final drive was an Oldsmobile 3.07 to 1 made in Lansing, Michigan
You would be delivering it to a friend's home.
I would be installing it in my 1975 GMC Motorhome
He told me that as long as the declared value was less than $2000 it would
be considered a Third Party Informal Entry. I have attached a copy of a
revised Bill of Sale reflecting a price of $1500 for all three items; I
trust you will be amenable to signing that document. Also note that I have
added VIN number for your GMC, the serial numbers for the engine and
transmission. I have attached a document Oldsmobile 455 Engine Serial Number
Information; this document details where to find it. The transmission serial
number is on a small aluminum tag on the side; I have attached a photo one
on a transmission I have here in Australia.
Supervisor Stoffel noted you would need to provide a completed EPA form
3520-21 United States Environmental Protection Agency Engine Declaration
Form / Importation of Engines, Vehicles, and Equipment Subject to Federal
Air Pollution Regulations (copy attached). You would tick block A.
Heavy-Duty highway engines (for use in motor vehicles with gross vehicle
weight rating above 8500 pounds). Since the engine was manufactured by GM in
the USA it meets emission standards in effect at that time.
You will need to provide a completed Department of Transportation form HS-7
(copy attached) Declaration Importation of Motor Vehicles and Motor Vehicle
Equipment Subject to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety, Bumper, and Theft
Protection Standards. Since it is over 25 years old it is exempt.
You will need to provide a completed Customs and Border Protection form 7523
Entry Manifest of Merchandise Free of Duty, Carrier's Certificate and
Release. Since the declared value is under $2000.00 there will be no duty.
You will need to provide a copy of the Ontario, Canada Title or Registration
Documents for the GMC from which the parts were removed.
You will need to provide the serial number of the engine. See attached copy
of Oldsmobile 455 Engine Serial Number Information
You will need to provide the serial number of the transmission - See
attached photo Transmission serial number tag
I have attached a copy of my Texas Drivers License in case Customs might
want to see it.
I have requested a friend of mine in Houston scan a copy of the Texas Title
for my GMC and will forward it to you also. For the record it is a 1975 GMC
outfitted by Avion and carries VIN365V100426 and is also powered by an
Oldsmobile 455.
I have attached a map showing where the engine would need to be delivered
to. As you can see it is 30 miles west of the Indy 500 Speedway.

As it turned out Ray didn't come to the USA and Ken Burton went up and got
it for me. He had all the documentation and to make absolutely sure that he
wouldn't have any problems bringing the engine back into the USA on the way
into Canada Ken stopped at US Customs and they reviewed the paperwork and
blessed it.
Ken got lucky and when he returned with the engine the customs agent on duty
was the same lady he had shown all the forms to on the way into Canada and
she waved him through with no problems.

All I can say is I'm glad I'm Canadian.
I have brought engine's and transmissions into the US in previous years and all I did was state that they were unserviceable and being used as cores that were worth less than 100$. They let me through with no hassles.
