I am looking for a replacement filter for the hydraulic windshield wiper motor. I don't see one in Jim K's catalog or the GMC Parts Catalog, and I don't find any reference to the actual filter in the GMCnet archives - lots of discussions of filter problems but no mention of where to get a new filter. Wiper operation is slow and a bit erratic.

Thanks, guys. And thanks for the offer Sully - my original filter is in place so I will work with it. I thought it might have a replaceable element that was a a throw-away and replace type.

Gene, I will try the filter in the down line. Does that not put a back pressure on the wiper motor and also slow it down?

Thanks,

Steve, if you remove the filter and it is in good shape but restricted it
can be cleaned with a wire bottle brush/contact cleaner/ and compressed air.

I just cleaned mine. The hardest part was getting it loose from the wiper motor. You would think they would have put a hex on it to allow you to loosen it up with a wrench instead of Vice Grips. What surprised me was that a whole bunch of fluid didn't run out when I pulled the line off.

Carl, You are correct. I would like to take mine off but am afraid of
damaging it with vise grips. How much force did it take to get it off?. Was
the brass corroded into the aluminum wiper motor housing?

Gary,

There was no corrosion, but it sure was tough to get off. I had trouble just getting the hydraulic line off the filter. It took more force than I thought it should, but finally broke loose (maybe 'broke' is a bad word... nothing actually broke) I then tried a pair of channel locks on the brass filter, but I wasn't able to get a good enough grip with them. I then went with a pair of curved jaw Vise Grips and had to REALLY tighten them down. It came off clean, but not before putting some marks on the brass tube. I also sprayed the fittings with PB Blaster. I didn't have the patience to let it penetrate for long though. Maybe if you hit it and let it soak overnight it might help.

I cleaned mine a couple of weeks ago while replacing the pump and hoses. It was tough to get off but it is a very thick brass pipe and I doubt that you could crush it. The working pressure on that hose and filter is around 1400 psi I think. It has to be heavy.

When Y'All get tire of tinkering with those always-antiquated hydraulic
wipers & cable control, remember that I've got a modern electric
replacement available. As shown on the web site in my signature block, it
consists of a mechanical mount and linkage for a '90-'96 Lumina APV wiper
motor, complete with the intermittent sweep and automatic wash features.
The linkage replicates the motion of the OEM motor and allows adjustment
of the sweep arc and its location.

The motor can be controlled with a later model GM column-mounted
multi-function switch, my Push-to-Wash/Twist-to-Wipe harness; or, wire it
yourself.

Of course, JimK keeps them in stock, or you can order directly from me.

Don't everyone order at once, 'cause the Cad 500's got harness production
at a standstill and a new production run of the mechanical parts is just
starting.

I might consider an electric wiper but it hasn't rained around here for so long I'm forgetting what rain drops on the windshield look like.
